AFL Living in Harmony Project

Anthony Rocca and Chris Egan at the Australian International Academy in Coburg Victoria

In partnership with the Australian Government through the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) the AFL has developed the AFL Living in Harmony project to encourage participation of culturally diverse communities across Australia in the Australian Football League (AFL). The AFL is recognised as a leader in working towards an inclusive and welcoming sport.

The AFL Living in Harmony project will build upon the AFL’s existing community work to achieve the following objectives:

Key objectives

  • To provide culturally diverse communities with an understanding of the benefits of becoming involved in Australian Football through either playing, umpiring, and supporting teams.
  • To raise awareness among the Australian Football community about culturally diverse communities and their potential, including the barriers they face and the benefits of their participation and inclusion.
  • To build capacity for more positive and constructive relationships between Australian Football clubs and culturally diverse communities
Diversity and cross-cultural awaremess seminars

Initiatives

The project has two main initiatives:

(1) Diversity and cross-cultural awareness seminars

Diversity and cross-cultural awareness seminars will be delivered to clubs and community groups with a focus on participation and inclusion. Seminars will highlight the important role Australian Football can play in building social capital. Seminars will provide practical strategies and tools to enable clubs to reach out to culturally diverse community groups.  The extensive AFL development staff network, plus current and recently retired AFL players, will assist in the presentations.

You Can Kick Goals
(2) AFL You Can Kick Goals educational package

The AFL You Can Kick Goals initiative is a curriculum resource that focuses on five broad value themes:

  • fair play,
  • respect yourself and others,
  • teamwork,
  • harmony and
  • leadership.

Kids

This resource consists of teaching manuals and student handbooks written specifically to meet the needs of Australian teachers and students in the middle primary, upper primary and lower secondary levels.
