Sega’s consumer business segment, which houses its videogame operations, posted a decline in net sales to 83.1 billion yen (591.4m / $929.1m) during the nine months ended December 31, 2009, although the company expects full-year sales growth of 3.6 per cent.

The division’s operating income came in at 1.4 billion yen (£10m / $15.7m), compared with an operating loss of 5.65 billion yen (£40.3m / $63.2m) during the same period the previous year.

Sega sold 16.73 million games during the first three quarters - 8.16 million in Europe, 6.09 million in the US and 2.47 million in Japan. Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Winter Games sold 5.67 million copies and Bayonetta 1.1 million units.

“While domestic sales were mostly firm thanks to streamlining the development by narrowing down the titles, overseas sales were weaker than expected following the adverse market condition, and also, the launch of some titles was postponed to the next fiscal year,” the company said in a statement.

Sega parent Sega Sammy recorded net income of 16.95 billion yen (£120.8m / $189.5m), compared to a net loss of 10.84 billion yen (£77.3m / $121.2m) the previous year.
