Bursaspor declared winner of eventful Antep-Bursa match

The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) yesterday declared Bursaspor the 3-0 winner by default in their away match in Gaziantep, which was called off after the assistant referee was injured by plastic bottles thrown by Antep fans.

The fifth match on Sept. 20 was suspended in the 63rd minute by referee Deniz Çoban, after boisterous Antep fans began throwing plastic bottles and other objects onto the field, with one hitting the assistant referee, Muharrem Yılmaz, on the head. Bursaspor was leading the game 1-0 until it was suspended.

The TFF board gathered in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku, where the Turkish national team played against Azerbaijan in a Euro 2012 qualifier, yesterday to examine video footage and match reports.

At hearing the news, Gaziantepspor Deputy Chairman Ömer Çelik said they would appeal the TFF’s decision. “We didn’t deserve this. We expected, at least, that the game would start from where it was stopped. We didn’t say that what the audience did was OK. The punishment should not have been this,” he said.
