New York Islanders defenceman James Wisniewski has been suspended two games for making an obscene gesture during Monday's game against the New York Rangers.

In the first period of action, Wisniewski and Avery had a verbal exchange and shoved each other in front of the Isles' net. Wisniewski then made the lewd gesture in the direction of the Rangers' agitator.

"A lot of actions on the ice are regrettable," Wisniewski said in a statement. "I've been given a suspension from the league, and I'm going to accept it and move on from here."

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman was in attendance at the game but said he did not see the gesture. Afterwards, Wisniewski said he didn't recall making the motion.

This wasn't Avery's first run-in with this type of subject matter, but this time he was the target; Avery was suspended for six games back in December of 2008 after making a comment about another NHL player's girlfriend. As a result of the incident, he had to undergo counselling for anger management.

After Monday's event, Avery spoke out about Wisniewski's gesture.

"Can you imagine if I did that?" he said. "They sent me to rehab the last time I did something. It's crazy."

Wisniewski will miss Wednesday's game at Washington and Friday's game at Pitsburgh. He will be eligible to return on Saturday at home against the Colorado Avalanche.
