Pregnant and Unhappy?

Can you offer advice for this mom-to-be?

This week, I received an email that tore at my heart.  The writer is a young woman who possibly received a bit of bad NFP instruction and now finds herself pregnant, afraid, and emotionally unprepared.  I’m so glad that she wrote me to reach out for support and encouragement. In my reply to her, I shared with her my memories of the day I learned I was pregnant with Eric.  Greg was so excited, and... READ MORE

Amnesty Begins In The Womb

http://www.franciscanfocus.com/

Amnesty International is demanding the decriminalization of abortion throughout Latin America in the name of human rights.

Their statement singles out Cuba (Cuba!) for praise, because it legalized abortion decades ago. Later we are informed:

Governments must meet their international obligations to protect human rights and give priority to sexual and reproductive health programmes, including sex education... READ MORE

Nobel, But Not Noble

Bourn Hall via Bloomberg via Washington Post

With the word that Robert G. Edwards has won the Nobel prize for medicine comes one of those odd moments when Catholics know we are in the world but not of it.

It is a stunning scientific achievement, and I’m sure he and his team are proud of helping more than 4 million children to be born, and feel good about what they see as humanitarian aid to infertile couples.

But the Prize Committee doesn’t comment on the number of “selective reductions” or embryos frozen and then decayed or frozen still it took to achieve that result.

I can’t help wonder how the world will think about this prize when we have some critical distance from it.

Will You "Give Back"?

Popular television show raises funds

Chances are if the television set in your home is turned on tonight, you might be joining the millions of Americans who will be tuned into American Idol’s “Idol Gives Back” special.  Previous versions of the show have combined to raise over $140 million for charity, but Pro-Life groups and individuals concerned with the sanctity of life have begun to broadcast the information that some of these funds... Room at the Inn partners with Belmont Abbey College to reach out to college women facing unplanned pregnancies

A huge thanks to my friend Tony Rossi of Christopher Closeup for bringing to my attention the story of Lacy Dodd, a board member of Room at the Inn, a Charlotte based pregnancy resource center and maternity after-care facility.  During this month of October when we pray for the dignity of all human life, Lacy is a true champion for the unborn.

Reaching Out to Women

Musings from a pro-life perspective

I’m just home from spending an hour praying in front of our local Planned Parenthood clinic as a part of my commitment to the 40 Days for Life campaign.  This morning, I was struck again by the prayerful reverence of those gathered with me, as we simply lined the street in front of the facility holding our placards.

I’m new to this - maybe you eventually get over the feeling of defeat and grief that... READ MORE

Social Justice & Health Care Reform

the bishops of Kansas City speak out
http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/new.php?n=13788

The bishops of Kansas City have released a joint pastoral statement on health care reform.

I think it’s important because it uses all the Catholic social justice principles to analyze proposed legislation.

Not just the life issues.

Not just the “right” to health care. (I’m using the scare quotes only because we need to be precise about what that right entails and what duties accompany it.)

They have some strong criticisms of the bills currently on the table.

But they are not on the side of those who think no reform is necessary.

See if you agree with me that this is the most thorough explanation of our Catholic duties and obligations as we wrestle with needed reform.
