Multi-instrumentalist Jon Brion's one album with The Grays earned him his well deserved cred as a quality popster, while his high profile film scoring (Punch Drunk Love, Magnolia) and production work (Aimee Mann, Fiona Apple) has paid the bills. But, it's Brion's sprawling live pop marathons at Largo (nearly) every week in Los Angeles that have sealed his legend. Brion - as a one man band using loops to layer various instruments live on stage - takes requests and puts his chops on the line to deliver a highly entertaining pastiche of pure pop's present and past. When in town for the Tribeca Film Festival, Brion took his act to New York's Tonic for two shows on April 27th. This 8pm performance comes to us from the sorely missed Brion resource blog, Fairfax Avenue (RIP). As you can hear below, there are some sound issues with this recording's rather tinny sonics, but considering that no two Brion shows are ever alike, these tapes are a valuable chance to appreciate Brion's process in front of an audience.
