Compulsory Confirmation?

Would you force a teen to prepare for Confirmation?

Today’s article on teenage mass issues by Tom and Caroline McDonald reminded me of a recent email query from a distraught mom that landed in my inbox:

Any suggestions for help with my daughter who came home from the first night of confirmation class and tearfully announced that she can’t make this commitment because she’s not sure she believes in God…? It’s going to be a long year.

Obviously, these... READ MORE

Big Kid Birthdays

How do you celebrate?

As I type this, I hear the dull roar of teenagers permeating the corners of my house.  Sunday is Adam’s birthday and we’re headed out of town for the weekend to a concert in LA.  So tonight (Friday), he’s got a houseful of friends over for a small celebration.  I’m reminded that at this age, teens love pizza, soda, chocolate chip cookies, and space.  The space part is the hard part - finding a way... Having the Tough Talks

Talking with your teens about drugs and alcohol - have you done it?

This article at iVillage recently caught my eye: “Mom to Mom Tips for Talking to Your Kids about Drugs”.  Since I’m a mom of teens, and also interact with a lot of my sons’ friends, I’m really desperate for any guidance that can help me to keep these precious young people safe and sane.  So I clicked through the suggestions, anxious for wisdom from women who had “been there, done that”.

Don’t get... READ MORE

WWJD? Is There a Better Question?

It’s on teen wristbands, hats, and t-shirts. I even once saw WWJD? tattooed on a young woman’s arm.

The idea, of course, is that we should continually ask ourselves: What Would Jesus Do? as a way of ensuring we will always do the right thing.

The question has become so commonplace, that I think most of us never pause to examine it. Or even to ask if this is an appropriate way to determine what we... READ MORE

First Impressions Count

How do we train our children in the art of good manners?

It’s College Fair season here in Central California, which means that I’m spending a few nights this week representing my alma mater at area events where students come to obtain information from a variety of colleges.

Last night, I was reminded again of the very sad state of manners in today’s high school students.  Out of approximately 800 students attending last nights event, exactly TWO students... READ MORE

Dorm Life

We're all settling in...

Today was the official move in day for Eric, his first “real” day of college life following five days of pre-orientation.  First thing this morning we met Eric’s new roommate, Nathan, and his amazing family.  The rest of the day was spent setting up their room, making numerous trips to the CVS for forgotten supplies (thank goodness it’s a close walk!), meeting new friends and doing other “set up”... College Life Begins

Starting the next phase of life...

Greg and I successfully navigated our journey to rainy Boston yesterday, completely unprepared for the weather.  Somehow in the midst of all the packing, we neglected to see the reports calling for rain the next few days.  We arrived at our hotel toting a mandolin, an electric bass, four rolling suitcases, and not a single jacket or umbrella.  We looked like a drowning middle aged rock band, but our... Countdown to College

The packing has begun

This is one of those “real world” types of blog posts where I open the window into our home and give you a peek into the chaos that sometimes is the Hendey household.

We are on the “countdown” to college.  Next Thursday, Greg and I will drive to San Francisco and put Eric on an airplane at 6 am.  He’ll land in Boston, take the subway on his own to Cambridge, and begin his college career at Harvard... READ MORE

New Driver on the Road

Who taught your kids?

Yesterday, as I was busy flying (back) to Philadelphia for this week’s Catholic Marketing Network and Catholic Writers Conferences, a milestone was occurring at my home.  Greg and Adam braved the DMV and Adam passed his driver’s permit test, so he is now ready to hit the road.  In California, teens can obtain their permits at age 15 and a half, but Adam’s a bit on the old side and will turn sixteen...
