The view from Mr. Robinson's neighborhood

Editor's note: Each Tuesday this season, one of ESPN.com's Heisman Watch voters will offer his or her take on the Heisman Trophy race.

For me, the best thing about this week is we have five players who, for the first time this season, look like they deserve the Heisman Trophy. It's been tough filling these polls out early in the season, but I felt pretty good about the Heisman field this week.

1. Denard Robinson, QB, Michigan: I was one of the guys who had Kellen Moore above Robinson the entire year. Until this week. Regardless of who Michigan is playing, his production and status as the nation's leading rusher as a quarterback is astounding. If he keeps at this pace and ends up running for 2,000 yards and throwing for 2,000 more, there's no way anyone should be above him, regardless of record. Any time the biggest criticism of a player is, "Well, he might get hurt doing what he's doing," you know you're talking about a special talent.

2. Kellen Moore, QB, Boise State: There's not a quarterback in college football I'd trust more down four on my own 20-yard line with two minutes to play. He showed why against Virginia Tech, and his decision-making over the course of the season has been great. The best news for Moore is that teams like Nevada and Utah State are playing well, and if that continues, he'll have a big finish to his year.

3. LaMichael James, RB, Oregon: There's no bigger home run hitter in college football, and James' big week against Stanford propelled him onto my list for the first time this week. The most staggering statistic from his day against the Cardinal is that he didn't have a single run for no gain or negative yardage. How many running backs have had a day like that ever? Much less one against a top-10 team in which he carried the ball 31 times?

4. Terrelle Pryor, QB, Ohio State: Pryor has shown the improvement as a passer he has needed to show to become the type of quarterback people thought he'd become. He's well on pace for career highs in completion percentage and touchdowns and career lows in interceptions. His game against Illinois wasn't great, but if you're busting 66-yard runs off and topping 100 yards rushing, you don't need to be Joe Montana.

5. Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama: Ingram didn't get a lot of touches against Florida, but he was reasonably productive with the ones he got. His game against Arkansas got him back into the race after missing the first two games of the year, and Ingram looks better than ever. With another big game against South Carolina this week, he'll have a shot to climb these ballots if he tops 150 yards again.

He's writing his name into the Michigan record books with alarming speed. Robinson recorded his second game with 200 yards rushing and 200 yards passing in the Wolverines' win over Indiana, joining exclusive company shared only by Texas' Vince Young. The road only gets tougher for Michigan, with a visit from in-state rival and fellow Big Ten unbeaten Michigan State on Saturday.

You'd be forgiven for thinking Moore wasn't playing this weekend, but the Broncos were indeed in action; it was just on the road at New Mexico State. Moore tossed three touchdown passes in limited action as the Broncos steamrolled to a 59-0 win.

Stanford tried, without much luck, to capture lightning in a bottle in the form of Oregon's diminutive playmaker. James was never tackled behind the line of scrimmage and rushed for a career-high 257 yards and three TDs in the Ducks' 52-31 win over the Cardinal. The win established the Ducks as the Pac-10's decisive favorites and saw them leapfrog Boise State in the AP Top 25 poll.

It was a scary -- if brief -- moment for Ohio State fans when Pryor momentarily left the game in a 24-13 win over Illinois. But he returned to complete the Buckeyes' Big Ten-opening win, tossing two touchdown passes and turning in his third 100-yard rushing performance of the season.

Judging Ingram's individual performance in the context of the Heisman race is tricky. He only rushed for 47 yards on 12 carries but scored Alabama's first two TDs. Less difficult, however, is judging the comprehensive nature of the Crimson Tide's dominant win over Florida. It was an impressive team performance for the nation's top-ranked team, and the road doesn't get much easier with a visit to South Carolina pending.

He's second in the nation in passing efficiency and was leading the SEC in rushing until this week, when he played sparingly and had only one rushing attempt in Auburn's rout of Louisiana-Monroe. Newton has been a revelation on the Plains, and opportunities abound to strengthen his candidacy. Most important will be keeping the Tigers from falling victim to a late-season swoon similar to last year's.
