THE advocacy group behind the 'Censorship isn't working: regulate instead' campaign has submitted a petition with 1,786 signatures in favour of their position to the authorities.
The petition, together with a paper that the arts community has penned, was submitted to the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts, the Prime Minister's Office and the censorship review committee on Tuesday.
The censorship review committee, a state-appointed group of 17 people, was convened to review current censorship regulations. It is expected to submit its report at the end of the month.
A Mica spokesman told Life! that the ministry has received the ArtsEngage paper. He added: 'We understand that the inputs from ArtsEngage will be considered by the Censorship Review Committee. We will respond to the report when it is submitted to the ministry.'
The petition is part of a sustained effort by ArtsEngage, a group of about 190 artists and individuals interested in cultural policy issues, to engage the censorship review committee.
The group has been lobbying for regulation and not censorship for the past few months.
