'Hawaii Five-0': Surf's up for Grace Park

The next episode of "Hawaii Five-0" delves into the surfing culture on the north shore of Oahu -- and features the biggest showcase yet for Grace Park's character, Kono Kalakaua.

The show has alluded several times to Kono's past as a competitive surfer, and Monday's (Oct. 25) episode, titled "Ko'olauloa," brings it into the forefront. The CEO of a surf-gear company is murdered, and it brings several people from Kono's past back into her life -- including the victim himself.

"It's someone who's very near and dear to her," Park told Zap2it when we visited the "Five-0" set in September during the filming of "Ko'olauloa." "He really took her under his wing and signed her on. That's the tragedy that starts the whole episode."

It also brings her back in the orbit of an old flame (guest star Josh Dallas), who's also the son of the murder victim's partner (guest star Kevin Sorbo). As you can see in the preview below, things get more than a little friendly between Kono and Dallas' character, Ben Bass.

Despite surfing being a huge part of Kono's life, it's not yet for Park. She says she'd love to learn, but as of mid-September she hadn't had much time to take lessons. "But they've been really cool about it," she says. "[The show] has been setting up some water days, and I'll try paddleboarding, and I'll sit out there on a short board, balancing.

"The stuff I read on paper, I was like, 'Oh, easy -- we'll just sit out there and do the whole scene.' I had no idea how difficult it is to do that."
