Irish Lacrosse League – Men

In the 2010-11 season, there will be five teams competing in the ILL:

    • UCD (reigning champions)
    • Dublin Lacrosse
    • NUI Galway
    • Dublin Bay Prawns
    • Trinity/Queens

As Trinity and Queens Lacrosse clubs are only in their founding stages, these teams will compete together for the duration of this season’s ILL. Also players from the newly founded Cork Lacrosse club will join with Dublin Lacrosse for this season’s ILL.

Each team will play each other in two league games over the season. There will be 20 games total in this season’s league, with each team playing 8 games. Games will consist of two 20 minute halves (running clock), with the last 2 minutes of the game stop clock). There will be a 5 minute half time. Each team has 1 90-second timeout only in each half (non-cumulative).

Dates of Gamedays and Locations

October 9th – Galway

November 13th – Cork

February 5th, 2011 – Dublin

March 5th – Belfast

April 2nd – UCD

The times, dates and locations have been confirmed for the first two gamedays (please see the 2010-2011 Fixtures Page). Pending the amount of teams (and thus number of games) we have competing in the ‘Newtownards Cup’, the schedule of the remaining games will be released later this year.

League Format

Points are awarded for each game on the following basis:

    • Win = 3 points
    • Draw = 2 points
    • Loss (by less than or equal to half the opponent’s score, e.g. 7-10, 3-5, 1-2) = 1 point
    • Loss (by more than half the opponent’s score, e.g. 4-10, 3-7, 0-1) = 0 points

If at the end of the season, two or more teams are tied for points, the league title will be awarded on the basis of:

    • Greatest Goal Difference.
    • Most Goals Scored.
    • The result between the two teams.
    • Coin Toss.

The winners of the ILL 2010-11 will be chosen as Ireland Lacrosse’s representatives at the European Club Lacrosse Championships, Autumn 2011 (date and venue TBC). If for any reason, this team cannot commit to represent Ireland at the championships, they must inform the ILL President in advance. In this situation, the second placed team in the ILL will represent Ireland at the championships.

The Executive Committee will keep track of games and scores for the season and update them on the ILL WebPage.

Newtownards Cup

Commencing in the 2010 -2011 season will be the introduction of a championship style competition during our men’s club lacrosse season, which will be a completely separate competition to the league. This competition will be temporarily called the ‘Newtownards’  Cup.

Teams that may not compete on their own in the ILL (e.g. Trinity, Belfast, Cork, a UCD 2nd team) will have the opportunity to compete as their own team in the Newtownards Cup. All clubs will be contacted from late December – mid January to confirm their interest in competing for the Newtownards Cup.

The Cup will operate on a quarter final / semi-final / final basis, depending on the amount of competing teams. There will be an open draw to determine the drawings for each game (held by the ILL President in mid-January).

The provisional dates for the Cup are (dates open to change depending on the number of competing teams):

  • Quarter finals: Gameday #3
  • Semi finals: Gameday #4
  • Finals: Gameday #5

All games up to and including the semi-finals will have 2x 20 minute halves. The Cup final will be 4x 15 minute quarters. In the Cup, if a match is tied at the end of normal time, extra time will be played until one team scores (Golden Goal) – this team will be declared the winner.
