5-10-15-20: The Extra Lens

The Mountain Goats' John Darnielle and Franklin Bruno on the music of their lives

5-10-15-20: The Extra Lens

Welcome to 5-10-15-20, where we talk to artists about the music they loved at five-year interval points in their lives. Maybe we'll get a detailed roadmap of how their tastes and passions helped make them who they are. Maybe we'll just learn that they really liked hearing the "Foofer" theme song over and over when they were kids. Either way, it'll be fun.

For this edition, we checked in with Mountain Goats frontman John Darnielle and Nothing Painted Blue leader Franklin Bruno, who collectively make up the duo the Extra Lens, and whose album Undercard is out now on Merge. However, Darnielle and Bruno didn't participate in the usual 5-10-15-20 process. They didn't give their exact ages, and sent an email in which both picked songs or albums from five-year intervals. But hey, we aren't complaining: these guys definitely know how to write. Oh, and Bruno only picked records by other duos.

I'm fairly certain the takeaway of this video is that if you play the lulling sounds of L.A. soft rockers Local Natives loud enough, otherwise sane people will be compelled to strip down to their underwear. See for yourself by watching the clip for Gorilla Manor track "Who Knows Who Cares" over at NME.
