Black and White Wednesday: Sensational Savage Sword of Conan Frontispieces

Dig it, Groove-ophiles! Today we're gonna plant our peepers on far-out frontispieces from Savage Sword of Conan! Today Ol' Groove's chosen to showcase comicbook artists we don't normally associate with Robert E. Howard's sword-slingin' Cimmerian, but oh, if only they'd had the chance to pencil a few Conan adventures for SSoC...

The Grooviest Covers of All Time: The Mighty Model "T" (Thor)

Hey, hey, hey, Groove-ophiles! No, this post isn't about snap-together, glue-together, or chiseled in stone Thor models. This post focuses on the mighty thunder god "posing for the camera." Poster covers, if you will. Jack Kirby, Gil Kane, John Buscema, Ron Wilson, and Keith Pollard gave us some truly iconic Thor covers. Today, almost every comicbook cover is pretty much a pin-up, but back during the Groovy Age, those types of covers pretty much guaranteed a special ish. Just as most of these were. Ol' Groove is sure you're gonna dig these mighty covers!

Tuesday Team-up: "A Monster Walks Among Us!" by Wolfman, Wilson, and Marcos

The Thing and Nighthawk? Who'd'a thunk it? Well, such a team-up actually happened in Marvel Two-In-One #34 (September 1977) courtesy Marv Wolfman, Ron Wilson, and Pablo Marcos. 'Tis one of those heart-string tuggers Wolfman was so good at, but what really makes this particular tale interesting is the glimpse into Kyle (Nighthawk) Richmond's private life--something we rarely saw in his regular nest, The Defenders...

Famous First Fridays: Ron Wilson's Debut

Greetings, Groove-ophiles! Remember Ron Wilson? He's probably best known for his work on The Thing in the 1980s, but during the Groovy Age he was one of Marvel's go-to guys for covers and fill-ins. He also spent a lot of time drawing the Thing in Marvel-Two-In-One (big surprise, huh?), but for me it was his rendition of the Hulk in The Hulk! Marvelcolor mag (remember these splashes?) that turned me on the most. Ron's style was definitely in the Mighty Marvel Manner, synthesizing parts of Kirby, the Brothers Buscema, and Gene Colan in his own unique way. Ron's first interior job was in, of all places, the seventh issue of Chamber of Chills (August 1973) on the Doug Moench-written "Prey for Keeps!" And yep, Ron drew the cover to that ish, as well!

Just for fun, here are a few samples of Ron's better-known work...

Making a Splash: The Power of Ron Wilson's Hulk!

Greetings, Groove-ophiles! While most think of Herb Trimpe and Sal Buscema as the major Hulk artists of the Groovy Age, many tend to forget the powerhouse penciling of Ron Wilson who drew most issues (10-22) of The Hulk! magazine from 1978-1980. Wilson's Hulk was a wonder to behold. Savage, powerful, and downright scary! No matter who the inker--Ric Villamonte, Fran Matera, Ernie Chan, Bob McLeod, Rudy Nebres, or Alfredo Alcala--Wilson's bold, vigorous pencils made the Hulk veritably leap off the page and into your face!Dig it!
