Manga Bulletin: July 16th, 2008
Written by Park Cooper

Hello, Park Cooper here, and welcome once again to Manga Bulletin, in which, among other things, ML will give you the manga/anime/industry news of the week and comment on it, perhaps snarkily (perhaps not). Indeed it’ll be a place for all sorts of shameless plugging, but let’s jump right into things with some professionals of hype with the newest press release I’ve gotten from... Viz!

...
David? Got any scorn?

David Rasmussen said:

This shows why VIZ is running rings around the severely injured TOKYOPOP.

Note-- Naruto, actually, according to associates, is one of the few series that has the least censoring/editing of any Anime on American TV right now. Of course it still gets some editing but compare it to more severely hacked series Naruto is lightly censored.

Oh, and the description for Death Note makes it sound rather stereotypical for a series that (in fact) is downright innovative and different than anything you've seen before. I can see why it's so praised (after watching a bit of it myself).

Athena and Alethea Nibley said:

This would be so much more awesome if they made the subtitled versions available, too.

...
Wow. Rasmussen looked like he was gonna go for a Viz scorn lay-up and instead surprises the audience by bouncing it off the ceiling rafters and into Tokyopop’s scorn-basket instead. And in the very next round, the Nibleys sort of execute a skillful backhanded dub-scorn. Truly a historic day in Scorn History.

And remember folks: They said it, not me.

Okay, anyone got anything to plug?

Ysabet Reinhardt MacFarlane:

CLAMP no Kiseki vol. 12 is out (in the last week or two, I guess; I'd thought it was scheduled for a bit later than it was). Alethea and Athena translated it and I adapted it. And technically they translated and I adapted the Fruits Basket Sticker Collection that came out within the last few weeks--the text is from the Fruits Basket Fan Book -Cat-, and I was a little surprised when I got my copy and found my name in the credits. ^_^

Athena and Alethea Nibley:

Atelier Marie & Elie volume 4: I don't remember exactly what happens in this volume, but I do remember it has Strafe, and that's really the important thing. Did anybody watch the Weekenders and see the episode where they talk about dangerous lost puppies? That's Strafe! But anyway, it's a really fun series, and it was adapted by our very own Barb Lien-Cooper, so check it out!

Elemental Gelade volume 8: Someday, we might do a column about Elemental Gelade. There's just a lot to talk about that covers the series as a whole. The characters are lots of fun and the art style is gorgeous, so we like it a lot.

Fruits Basket volume 20: Apparently this one came out two whole weeks ago, which means you guys all have it by now. Isn't it awesome?

Nosatsu Junkie volume 6: People need to know about this series, because it's awesome, and we think it's under-appreciated because nobody knows about it. And yet I hesitate to just tell people what the premise is, because it's one of those ones that's better if it's a surprise. So just go to the bookstore and read the first chapter and see what you think!

Pick of the Litter volume 4: We were really happy to be able to translate this series, because we knew about it before TokyoPop even licensed it. We love it to bits, and all the characters are so much fun. I say that a lot, but when characters are fun, they're fun, right? Of course, volume four is probably the only one that starts in the middle of a story arc, so it might be best not to start with it. But it's about a boy who finds his lost family when they came looking for him from anooootherrrr worrrrrrrld! (See how it got all dramatic? The series isn't really like that. It's more of a comedy.)

CLAMP no Kiseki 12: We really hope people are buying CLAMP no Kiseki, because it took a lot of work. And I mean a lot. Like whoa. Fanbooks are hard. And volume 12 took even more work, because we ended up translating it twice. We knew we'd have to translate it eventually, so we got a head start when we had some free time, and then our computer completely died, so we had to translate it again! And we were almost done with it! TT_TT But it talks about Tsubasa and Kobato and it's really neat, and this particular volume was adapted by our very own Ysabet MacFarlane, so check it out!

Okay, that’s all for this week’s Manga Bulletin—please look forward to next time...
