Trying to stave off a sudden fusillade from the left, White House senior adviser David Axelrod said Thursday that Howard Dean's criticisms of health-care reform are "predicated on a bunch of erroneous conclusions" and that for progressives to torpedo the legislation "would be a tragic, tragic outcome."
“To defeat a bill that will bend the curve on this inexorable rise in health-care costs is insane,” Axelrod said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” "I don’t think that you want this moment to pass. It will not come back."
Axelrod called in from the West Wing as the White House mobilized Thursday morning in the face of a surprising and potentially fatal chorus of opposition from the left.
In the most vivid indication of the crisis facing White House messengers, MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann told viewers Wednesday night that the Senate version has become “unsupportable … a hollow shell of a bill.”
Former DNC chairman and Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, an unofficial leader of progressives, on Thursday began a third day of media appearances by arguing in a Washington Post op-ed that the compromise emerging this week meets “none” of his benchmarks for “real reform.”
Axelrod, responding on MSNBC, said: “I have a lot of respect for Governor Dean but he got on the phone with Nancy-Ann DeParle, our point person on the health care issue, went through point by point. She explained why he was wrong. And he simply didn’t want to hear that critique. I saw his piece in The Post this morning, and it is predicated on a bunch of erroneous conclusions.”
Asked his response to progressives who say “kill this bill now,” Axelrod replied: “I think that would be a tragic, tragic outcome. … I guess if you’re hale and hearty and have insurance, it’s fine to say, ‘Kill this bill.'"
Peggy Noonan, the columnist and former Reagan speechwriter, told Axelrod: “On the issue of health care, you are losing the left, you are losing the right, you are losing the center. That looks to me like a political disaster.”
“When you describe what’s in the bill, there’s strong support for it,” Axelrod replied. “We don’t think of the world in terms of left, right and center. We think of the world in terms of small business people, … senior citizens, … Americans who are looking for help on a problem that we’ve been trying to solve for a century.”
On the White House blog, communications director Dan Pfeiffer linked to an attack by Dean, then rebutted it without mentioning him by name: “[A] somewhat perplexing new line of argument has emerged about health insurance reform, with some folks suggesting the Senate bill is a ‘dream’ for insurance companies. If that's the case, though, it must be news to them. The insurance industry has been leveraging its considerable resources in a ferocious effort to defeat this bill.”

Who elected Axelrod?
I guess a lot of what has happened to us can be blamed on Axelrod as he seems brighter than Obama.
But, they both come from that seedy place called Chicago
Please consider how Thomas Cromwell affected Obama's health care and banking reform efforts 500 years later. It was Thomas Cromwell who radically restructured the English monarchy by separating out a tight inner circle, called the Privy Council, which structured what is today the US President's Executive Cabinet. So, why only 10 years later, was the man who was so important to the monarchy executed? Could the real underlying reason for Henry VIII's disgrace from Cromwell's recommendation of a marriage to Anne of Cleves actually been that Henry VIII figured out he lost control of his domain to Cromwell and his fellow business interests? Could Henry have chopped of the head of a useful and financially beneficial association in order to regain control?
According to Wallace MacCaffrey's book Elizabeth I, "The Privy Council consisted of a mix of men of influence and men of business, with an infusion of the monarch's personal servants." Since after Henry VIII's death there was no adult monarch after 1547, this gave these business men the ability to consolidate their position and control of the monarchy. By 1553, their services were totally indispensible.
While our founding father's wisely separated church from state to protect governing from the burdens of religious politics; they did not separate business from government. Instead, in their own interest, they provided a way to include business in the US Constitution. Under Article II of the Executive Branch, Section 2 - Civilian Power over Military, Cabinet, Pardon Power, Appointments it states, "...he may require the Opinion, in writing, of the principal Officer in each of the executive Departments, upon any subject relating to the Duties of their respective Offices..." Therefore, business established a foothold for the manipulation of government for the benefit of business. Thus, when we look at Bush and Obama's advisors we see a heavy Goldman Sachs influence that favored the banking industry and Goldman Sachs with billions in government bailouts. Over the last 250 years of our existence, this relationship between the executive branch and business has favored the auto, steel, oil, and health care companies, deforestation, toxic mining and the spending of billions to cover the cost of the toxic clean up while the companies themselves conveniently went bankrupt to protect their investors. And, we see it again with Obama’s back room deals with the health care industry, the auto industry and the banking industry.
oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
We really need health reform and you are the insane one , David Axelrod for
screwing this opportunity up . I hope Obama gets another teleprompter and
throws your worthless behind under the bus .

no one's talking about sinking the entire initiative- period. the bill currently in the senate is a huge give away to the health insurance industry & pharma. quit BS yourself WH. there are no cost containment measures in the senate bill as it stands without a public option/medicare buy-in & exchange. as a matter of fact, the senate bill is ideally what the GOP has wanted and they're still not supporting it. the GOP wanted stronger anti-abortion language- it's in there. the GOP wanted interstate purchasing of health insurance- it's in there. the GOP didn't want a government run option to compete against private insurers- they got it. the GOP didn't want reimportation of prescription drugs [just as they left it out of medicare part d in 2003]- it's not in there. the GOP didn't want cost containment on what insurers could charge for preexisting coverage- they got it. the GOP has gotten more of what they wanted in the senate bill than they could have bargined for and STILL won't vote for the bill. WE'VE KNOWN THIS SINCE AUGUST.
the "public option" won't fly under budget reconciliation BUT medicare expansion surely can. put that provision in the house bill in lieu of the public option, drop the senate bill, adopt the house bill and pass it on reconciliation and lets move on. you won't need the votes of liebernan, landrieu, lincolon, nelson or baucus. this can certainly be passed by christmas- fact is, it's what should have been done months ago.
axelrod, president obama- check my sig line...
What would be insane is to let Ben Nelson and Blanche Lincoln carry on the charade of being Democrats, much less progressives.
There is a Green Party candidate running against Blanche Lincoln for the Arkansas Senate seat next November. He only needs to win enough votes in his home territory of Fayetteville, AR, and he'll keep Lincoln from winning.
Senator Lincoln doesn't deserve to be re-elected.
As Gov. Dean said, Lincoln is the insurance lobby representative in the Senate, along with Nelson, Baucus, and Landreu.
We need Green candidates running against all of those guys, but especially Lincoln and Nelson.
Axelrod, we aren't interested in your attempts at face saving. This bill is reform in name only. In reality, it is a big taxpayer give away to the insurance companies.
We are sick and tired of your efforts to pretend you are bringing about any change.
Why would I not vote for Health Care Reform?

.
No, it would be insane to trust healthcare to a bunch of Marxist stooges.
While Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid scrambles to assemble 60 Democratic votes for health care legislation that, according to the realclearpolitics.com average of recent polls, is opposed by a 53 percent-to-38 percent margin, several Democratic members of the House are scrambling for the exits on what is starting to look like a sinking ship.
KILL THIS TOTALLY WORTHLESS BILL PLEASE!
Ok lets get this sraight. The WH isn't happy because MR. 'socialist' Dean says 'kill the bill'? Isn't he a doctor? Wouldn't you trust his opinion over a political hack like Mr.Axlerod? I would.
Side note: Could someone PLEASE get MSNBCs Chuck Todds head out of the WHs butt. Its getting pretty sad how he has go out making excuses for the WH. He needs to get a job there, he just can't hide his love for Mr.Obama as with the other MSNBC Obama Fan Club member Mr. Matthews. Do you see a trend here?
Axelrod is insane. The king the of weaklings in the Obama administration is out of his mind. Only insane people who control the White House, Senate and the House of Representatives would let Traitor Joe Leiberman and other worthless cretins control the healthcare debate. Only insane people who have the position of strength and power would negotiate everything away and get nothing in return. Maybe there will be a set balls in Obama's and Axelrod's stockings this year
Deprive the Insurance Lobby of one of their strongest representatives. Give the people of Arkansas a representative!
Campaign, blockwalk, contribute to John L. Gray.
Memo to the Left :
Big Buisness & Monopolies ALWAYS benefit from Big Government, (until maybe the'yre hanged by the rope they sell to the Marxists.)
Corollary 1: Small & Mid-Sized producers benefit from free market competition.
Corollary 2 : Workers benefit w/ higher wages & Standard of Living,
Corollary 3 ; We all have Greater Freedom
Wow looking at the comments on this page make me realize how terrible America's education system is. Marxist? Ridiculous. As for the other idiot saying Obama is unintelligent, you may want to go back and get you GED before you critique a man that went to Harvard. As for Chicago been seedy, its a beautiful, world class city you have clearly never been.
Green Party Candidate for Arkansas Senate from Fayetteville, Arkansas.

How about a representative for the people of Arkansas, instead of a representative for Blue Cross Blue Shield? What a concept!!
Axelrod is a parrot, mouthing the "correct things at the correct time".
He has no clue, nor does he care to know, what real Americans will have to go through were the insanity of the "Reform" Bill to become law.
He wants power and only power. What he apparently does not get here is that his party members just might want to be re-elected. More and more realize that having their name on this travesty is the kiss of death.

Here's the letter that I wrote to my elected officials in Pennsylvania:
YOU are supposed to vote the way that your constituents would have you vote. After all, it's your constituents that voted for you, so that you'd represent their point of view
VOTE NO on Government run health care - the public option. Could I be any clearer than that?
Ignore the presidents threats; and if closing a military base is a scare tactic used in order to secure that health care gets voted for, I think that that is TREASON. I say that because closing a strategic military base would infer National security. You aren't treasonous. Are you?
You took an oath, when you took office, to preserve, protect and defend the constitution of the United States. Please tell me where in the United States Constitution it mandates that I must purchase something, to be considered a citizen of the United States.
AND, if the bill passes (which would be the worst thing that could ever happen to this country), will all elected officials use the same government run health care system? Or is it not good enough for you?
Well, let me tell you - It's not good enough for me.
Oppose the president, as he tries to change the United States into an Arab state; which has been his agenda, all along.
The goal of a government-run insurance option is to slowly erode existing private insurance plans to the point where the so-called government option is the only option. A government-run system is no option at all. I urge you to oppose any "reform" plan that includes government-run health care.
Current cost estimates of many of the health care plans on the table in Congress suggest the price tag will exceed $1 trillion, with hundreds of billions of dollars in new taxes likely. Such a costly increase in the burden on current and future American taxpayers is unacceptable.
Please oppose any legislation that gives government bureaucrats the power to step in between a doctor and their patient. Reducing choice and competition will only lead to higher costs and less care.
The evidence of the tragic failures of government-run health care in places like Canada and the UK make clear that it is not the solution here in America. Instead, we need reform based on the principles of Choice, Competition, Accountability, and Personal Responsibility.
