Toyota’s Australian division was brought into existence in 1958 when Toyota Land Cruisers were imported for use in the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric scheme.

Toyota currently has over 15 vehicles available in Australia, ranging from passenger cars such as the Camry and Aurion, 4WD passenger models such as the Land Cruiser and RAV4, and light commercial models such as the Hiace and Hilux.

Australia is only one of over 25 countries in which Toyota has manufacturing and/or assembly operations. Based in Altona, Victoria, Toyota’s Australian plant currently produces the Camry and Aurion, and will shortly commence production on the Toyota Camry Hybrid, the result of a $35million subsidy awarded by the Federal Government.

Toyota has been the international car sales leader since 2004, before which the title was held by GM (Holden). The company, which is ranked eighth on Forbes list of the world’s leading companies (2005), will sell its 9-millionth vehicle in 2010.

Toyota is one of the industry leaders in the development and implementation of emission-lowering technology. The Toyota Prius, which features Toyota-developed technology known as the Hybrid Synergy Drive, is the cornerstone of this environmentally-conscious approach. The Hybrid Synergy Drive is the most used environmentally-friendly system in the industry.

Lexus, founded in 1989, is the luxury division of Toyota Motor Corporation and currently produces sedan, coupe, convertible and SUV models, as well as a hybrid variant.

In Australia, Toyota’s racing presence is centred around motorsport rally racing, with Toyota Racing Development producing a variant of the Corolla for these events. Internationally, Toyota has been a part of Formula One racing since 2002, in conjunction with Citroen and Peugeot.
