Telltale’s Back to the Future: The Game Coming to iPad

Puzzle Agent and Sam & Max developer Telltale Games announced today that its upcoming episodic adventure game series based on the Back to the Future film franchise will arrive on the iPad soon after its debut for PC platforms later this year.

Back to the Future: The Game, also set to debut for the PlayStation Network at a later date, directly follows up on the events seen in the film trilogy, and is said to take place six months after Back to the Future III.

Telltale notes that series screenwriter and co-creator Bob Gale is involved in the game’s development, and all episodes will feature voice acting from Doc Brown himself, Christopher Lloyd.

Preliminary details and teaser trailers are available at Telltale’s site. The first episode of Back to the Future: The Game is scheduled for a December release for PC platforms.

Cave Updates Dodonpachi Resurrection, Releases New Bug Panic Trailer

The manic shoot-’em-up specialists at Cave have released an update for their App Store hit Dodonpachi Resurrection, and have revealed new details regarding the upcoming action game Mushihimesama Bug Panic.

Version 1.0.3 of Dodonpachi Resurrection fixes minor bugs and adds a screen-flipping mode for iPad users who had difficulty with the placement of the device’s screen scaling button. Also included is a Dodonpachi Series History feature — a valuable resource, as much of the franchise’s lore has previously never been available in English.

The new update also introduces a hidden Easter egg — pause the game at any point and shake your iOS device to trigger it. After unpausing, you’ll be treated to a remixed background music track, featuring Dodonpachi-themed Japanese vocals.

Cave is also wrapping up development on its iOS-exclusive Mushihimesama series spinoff Bug Panic. Notably, the game features music from Castlevania series composer Michiru Yamane, along with tracks from game and movie soundtrack musician Mica Nozawa.

Bug Panic will offer a single-player Story mode and an endless Score Trials mode when it launches in the App Store this fall.

Sega Launches New Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Trailer; Out Now in App Store

Above is a new trailer promoting the upcoming App Store edition of Sega’s retro-inspired platformer Sonic the Hedgehog 4.

In addition to demonstrating a few key mechanics in the game’s first zone, the trailer also shows off the neon-tinted Casino Street Zone and a few seconds of what could be the game’s final level, the Mad Gear Zone.

It also features a new and somewhat nauseating gimmick that causes the entire gameplay screen to rotate in relation to Sonic whenever he passes through a loop. Barf.

The trailer promises that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will arrive in the App Store tomorrow… [edit] …and hey, here it is! It’s $9.99, and it’s available worldwide. Have at it, Sonic fans.

Capcom Arcade to Launch with Commando, Street Fighter II, 1942, Ghouls’n Ghosts

Capcom revealed at a press event yesterday that it plans to bring many of its classic arcade titles to the iPhone and iPod Touch with the upcoming compilation Capcom Arcade.

Capcom Arcade will be available as a free download, and all included games will be free to play for a limited number of times per day. Players will need to buy additional play credits via an in-app purchase if they wish to play beyond the daily limit. Alternatively, unlimited credits for any game featured in Capcom Arcade can be purchased at a cost of $3.99 for each title.

Upon its launch, Capcom Arcade will feature four titles: the vertically scrolling shoot-’em-up 1942, overhead action game Commando, side-scrolling platformer Ghouls’n Ghosts, and the seminal one-on-one fighting game Street Fighter II.

Acknowledging that a virtual d-pad and buttons are not a good match for its notoriously difficult arcade games, Capcom notes that an alternate, easier play mode will be included with each game featured in Capcom Arcade. Street Fighter II’s control setup will feature a single button that triggers special moves, for instance, while Commando’s iPhone-optimized mode replaces the original game’s one-hit deaths with a five-hit life meter.

Capcom Arcade will launch in the App Store next month. Capcom plans to add at least one new classic arcade game to the compilation every month thereafter.

Capcom Reveals Upcoming Dead Rising Mobile for iPhone 3GS

Capcom is set to unleash yet another survival horror title in the App Store later this year with its Dawn of the Dead-inspired Dead Rising Mobile.

Much of Dead Rising Mobile’s content will be based on the 2006 Xbox 360 title Dead Rising, which saw the war-covering photojournalist Frank West take on a zombie-filled mall using a variety of improvised weapons.

Judging from the screenshots released so far, Dead Rising Mobile places much of its gameplay emphasis on combat, offering few of the more unique elements that defined the console original. Frank can no longer take pictures of zombie hordes for experience points, nor can he wear clothes found in mall stores.

The survivor escorting mechanic has also been simplified, though anyone who has played the original Dead Rising knows that this can only be a blessing. After encountering a human survivor, players will only need to return to a safe room before a timer expires — the survivors will not be present on the game screen, and players will not need to guide them by making Frank repeatedly shout “Over there! C’mon! Over there!” while desperately hoping that they won’t act like total morons for once.

(Sorry — I played through Dead Rising for the first time last week, so the experience is still fresh in my mind.)

Dead Rising retains the console edition’s experience system, rewarding players for zombie kills and survivor escorts with new skills, stat boosts, and extra inventory slots. The game also seems to include a hunger system, requiring Frank to hit up the food court occasionally to stock up on orange juice and delicious pies.

Capcom notes that Dead Rising Mobile will include Retina display support when it launches this winter. Unfortunately, owners of earlier hardware generations are out of luck with this one — Dead Rising Mobile is only compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad, and third- and fourth-generation iPod Touch devices.

New Call of Duty: World at War Zombies Map Debuts Tomorrow

Activision announced that a new downloadable map will be released tomorrow for its popular iOS first-person shooter Call of Duty: World at War Zombies.

The Der Riese (“Zombie Factory”) map, adapted from downloadable content originally released for the console editions of Call of Duty: World at War, will be available as a $4.99 in-app purchase within the core Call of Duty: World at War Zombies app.

Der Riese follows up on Activision’s previous Call of Duty: World at War Zombies map expansions — the “Verrückt” zombie asylum and the “Shi no Numa” swamp level.

Activision initially attempted to repackage its expanded content in the standalone app Call of Duty: World at War Zombies II, which offered no additional features other than a different default map. World at War Zombies II has since been removed from the App Store for unspecified reasons.

Taito Reveals Upcoming iOS-Exclusive Bubble Bobble Double

Following up on last week’s debut of Gardening Mama, multiplatform publisher Taito revealed that a new iOS-exclusive entry in its long-running Bubble Bobble franchise is on its way to the App Store.

Taito describes the upcoming Bubble Bobble Double as “two games in one: a faithful recreation of the classic Bubble Bobble arcade game plus a completely new game designed especially for touch screens!”

The arcade version of Bubble Bobble, originally released in 1986, stars a pair of bubble-blowing dinosaurs who must pop enemies and collect point-boosting food items throughout 100 single-screen levels. The game saw a popular port for the 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System, and many Bubble Bobble characters were later featured in Taito’s Bust-A-Move puzzler franchise.

Few details have been revealed regarding Bubble Bobble Double’s new touch screen-specific gameplay mode, though the preview video below shows what appears to be a combo-based puzzler using sprites from the original arcade Bubble Bobble.

Taito notes that Bubble Bobble Double will arrive in the App Store “very soon.”

Bulkypix to Bring Gobliiins Series to iPhone

French App Store publisher Bulkypix (Pix’n Love Rush, My Brute) announced that it will release the first three entries in the classic point-and-click adventure franchise Gobliiins for the iPhone and iPod Touch by the end of the year.

Originally released for a variety of PC platforms in the early ’90s, the Gobliiins games challenge players to solve a series of puzzles using the talents of multiple goblin characters. The first game, set to launch in the App Store soon, puts players in control of three goblins — the warrior BoBo, magician Hooter, and the technician Dwayne.

The first sequel, Gobliins 2: The Prince Buffoon, pares its gameplay down to two controllable characters, and introduces puzzles that span more than one screen. Goblins Quest 3 stars a single goblin and his talented sidekicks, and features several interconnected levels.

Following up on the imminent release of Gobliiins, Bulkypix will release Gobliins 2 on November 15th, and will conclude the original trilogy with the App Store launch of Goblins 3 on December 15th.

Two Tribes to Port Edge, Frenzic, Swords & Soldiers to New Platforms

Toki Tori developer Two Tribes announced that it will bring a pair of App Store hits to new platforms later this year.

The Iconfactory’s Independent Games Festival finalist Frenzic will be the first to get a Two Tribes port, with an enhanced version of the puzzler set to arrive for Nintendo’s DSiWare service this fall.

Two Tribes will then set its sights on Mobigame’s acclaimed action game Edge, announcing plans to release a port for Valve’s Steam platform “at a later date.”

“Some developers don’t have the experience or time to bring their games to other platforms and our goal is to to help them out with that”, said Martijn Reuvers, Managing Director of Two Tribes, “so we’d like to encourage developers of awesome indie titles to get in touch with us!”

Two Tribes will additionally release an iPhone and iPad version of Ronimo Games’ strategy title Swords & Soldiers, now available for WiiWare and launching soon on the PlayStation Network.
