  • Reshuffle – early verdict

    March 23, 2010 @ 7:00 pm | by Harry McGee

I’ve written a piece of analysis for the online edition, which should be going up about now. Here is it (written slightly less informally than the blog).

There was never even a remote possibility that today’s Cabinet reshuffle would emulate Albert Reynolds’s sacking of eight Ministers when he became Taoiseach in 1992.

  • Lest We Forget

    June 9, 2009 @ 9:29 pm | by Deaglán de Bréadún

Before they disappear under the receding wave of time, here are some impressions of the recent elections. In the course of the campaign, some people complained they were boring but the present writer didn’t find that to be the case.

  • The Gospel According to John

    April 27, 2009 @ 12:44 pm | by Deaglán de Bréadún

In politics you have to expect the unexpected. Who would have thought that, in getting sacked as Minister of State for Trade and Commerce, John McGuinness would have become a focus of public discontent with the current state of things.

  • ‘He Who Is Not With Us Is McGuinness’

    April 25, 2009 @ 12:00 pm | by Deaglán de Bréadún

So are we in for a period of dissent in Fianna Fáil that will be reminiscent of the Haughey era? John McGuinness is certainly not taking his dismissal as a junior minister lying down. But could he seriously undermine Cowen’s leadership?

  • Oliver Cromwell and the Fianna Fáil Ardfheis

    February 28, 2009 @ 11:14 pm | by Deaglán de Bréadún

Someone asked me what the Fianna Fáil ardfheis was like. “It was like a very large country wedding,” I replied. (more…)

  • Brian Cowen, the second 100 days

    January 19, 2009 @ 12:49 pm | by Harry McGee

Sometime in late April or early May there will be flurries of analysis pieces all headlined ‘Obama: The First 100 Days’.

There’s no doubt about it. It is an enticing headline and implies the first weathervane of how the leader is coping with the new job; and the first signs of the imprint they may evenutally make. (more…)

  • Splitting hairs over minister’s expenses?

    November 27, 2008 @ 1:08 pm | by Deaglán de Bréadún

Check out last night’s Vincent Browne news and current affairs programme on TV3 by clicking here and you will see a lively discussion on Mary Harney’s free hairdo (“standard wash and blow-dries”) from training and employment agency Fás.

  • Playing hardball and boxing clever

    September 24, 2008 @ 12:00 am | by Deaglán de Bréadún

It’s shaping up to be a lively Dáil session when the TDs reassemble at Teach Laighean this morning and already there is a fairly decent story for the journos to get their teeth into. Fine Gael wanted an emergency debate on the economy, the Government said No, now FG are refusing to give pairings to FF ministers jetting off to the UN and sundry other destinations. (more…)

  • Cowen – you think it’s all over?

    August 5, 2008 @ 4:19 pm | by Harry McGee

    Event: The Lisbon Treaty falls.

Implicaton: Brian Cowen’s reign as Taoiseach is off to a rocky start.
