Juror 13 v1
Reviewed by Dan Polley

Jeremy Rosen works in the claims department of an insurance firm, Occidental Insurance, in Juror 13. The book opens as Jeremy is facing a downturn in his life — he’s no longer with his former girlfriend and the stress he’s facing at his job seems to be constantly mounting.

As Jeremy’s troubles continue to spiral downward, he receives something greatly unexpected: A jury summons. After this, Jeremy keeps feeling more and more disoriented and events unfold that make him feel isolated and alone. And it sure doesn’t help that his best friend, Jake, is dating his ex-lover, Dawn.

The plot is a bland ride down a clichéd highway — it really doesn’t provide anything that hasn’t already been written about in a creative and interesting way. While the book is rated for older teens, there are really only brief flashes of sexual and violent content, concentrated near the end of the book.

Aside from that, the story can at times be interesting, but is mostly overdone.

The art isn’t particularly grand, either. It’s a bit cartoonish and doesn’t really seem to fit the feel of the story. None of it particularly stands out, except for some of the sequences toward the end.

The redeeming factor in Juror 13 is Jake. He’s an interesting character, although a bit of a stereotype, and is the only character who adequately breaks out of the cartoonish art in the story. Without him, this wouldn’t really be worthy of too much thought.

Juror 13 is just another manga. But there are points to it that are interesting. Other than that, Juror 13 is largely forgettable.
