Kare Kano v2
Reviewed by Jason Brice

Yukino Miyazawa and Soichiro Arima continue to build their relationship, and if anything, the pace slows down a little, and as we revisit some of the issues seemingly resolved in the first volume of this series.

In the first chapter of the second volume, Miyazawa struggles to find the courage and the right opportunity to express her feelings for Arima; she finally does this by holding his hand in class. The second chapter sees school and extra-curricula activities posing difficulties for Miyazawa and Arima's attempts to spend time together now that they are officially going out. Hideaki Asaba, a boy whose good looks rivals those of Arima, is introduced in the third chapter. He is immediately set up as a competitor for Arima's time and attention, and the dynamic of tension between Hideaki and Miyazawa is atypically explored and resolved in a speedy manner. Tsuda uses the fourth chapter to further explore Miyazawa and Arima's internal worlds, as they alternately narrate their view of the relationship, switching point of view from page to page.

Again, the major complaint a casual reader might have is the uneven pace of the storytelling. However, this is counter-balanced by Tsuda's ability to convincingly articulate her characters' doubts, fears, and worries. It is easy to imagine that Miyazawa and Arima’s teen angst could easily become grating in less able hands. There is not as much of the wry humor present in the initial volume, which provided emotional respite from the romance. More laughs, please. Additionally, I didn't quite understand the emotional logic of the subplot with Hideaki. More explanation, please.

Tsuda's art is more confident in this volume, and I look forward to seeing it evolve further in subsequent books.
