  • How's Shannon'' Peace''-Port doing then since Mr O arrived on the scene? Don't look much like that hopey-changey thing's worked too well in that fetid little sewer in the bogs of Clare since it was a Bushco War-port. Ah well. Peace can come in many ways. When all is ruin once again is one.

  • Sure he will. Once war with Iran is under way by 2012. Some have 'greatness' thrust upon them Mr O.

  • No. The US is at heart, a deeply conservative place. Now and again there are outbreaks of discontent with Republicanism, but this is essentially a temporary desire for a new face. There is no great love for the Democrats, or social democracy in the US. What is most noticeable though is the appalling ignorance and infantilism of the overwhelming majority of US voters, and their inability to engage with any remotely complex concepts. Ironically, the educational standards of many successful "socialist democratic" countries, do at least produce in general, a more engaged and knowledgeable electorate.

Will the proposed consumer code for financial services adequately protect consumers?

  • Since when, did any financial institution honour any code, other than their own greed?
    Peter Lawlor Ireland
  • I think it will go quite some way to improving protection for consumers. However, it will depend on adequate monitoring and enforcement which was sadly lacking previously. The fact that institutions are still allowed to display in advertisements important financial information in very small, practically illegible, print, contravening the present code gives serious concern. The unwillingness to sanction them by the very same people who previously worked under the old regime, but now in the Central Bank, does shake my hope for reform. One further thought - would it be more descriptive if the Consumer Protection Code was called - for example "The Bankers' Code" or the "The Financial Institutions' Code of Practice". It would be much more meaningful to consumers as a 'consumer protection code' can cover any area of activity.

  • Today's question should have been ¿ Why was the cabinet meeting to discuss the budget cancelled yesterday afternoon? Lets get away early, its Friday? My sympathies to the Martin family on their terrible loss but other children die every day. Other children are starving due to the state of the nation's finances, the Cabinet should be on this matter 24/7.

  • Clive u ignoramous...ireland has some of the best golfers in the world at the moment, it is also a game of pure honesty unlike the corrupt GAA. the current ranking system is accurate enough but doesnt reward winning enough. Kaymer has won 6 times in the last 2years to westwoods 3....kaymer is top man for me!

  • Not since Greg Norman's day has there been a credible ranking system which was flexible enough to take account of constantly changing form, and peaks and troughs ! Tennis seems to have done a much better job in coming up with a system that reflects changes more rapidly and actually reflects current form !
