Did Prop 19 Pass in California? Voters Nix Marijuana Plan

(CBS/AP) The hopes of those who hoped for pot legalization were dashed Tuesday when California voters overwhelmingly rejected the proposal to make recreational pot use legal.

Proposition 19 - the "Regulate, Control and Tax Cannabis Act" - would have allowed adults 21 and over to possess up to an ounce of marijuana and consume it in private as long as no children were present. It would have also allowed them to grow pot in small gardens or plots.

Prop 19 also would have authorized local governments to permit commercial pot cultivation, as well as the sale of the drug at licensed establishments.

Although the measure was ultimately a no-go, it enjoyed high-profile support, including that of the state branches of the NAACP and the League of United Latin American Citizens.

Former U.S. Attorney General Dr. Jocelyn Elders told CBS News that "as a pediatrician, [her] primary concern is the welfare of young people," and that she's bothered over what she says is the high number of American youth serving time in prison for nonviolent marijuana-related offenses.

There does seem to be a large generation gap when it comes to whether one supports legalization. A CBS News exit poll of California voters found high levels of support for the measure primarily among people under 40.

Those in favor of legalization have not given up. "National public sentiment is increasingly turning against the idea that responsible adults should be criminalized for using a substance less harmful than alcohol," said Rob Kampia of the Marijuana Policy Project. "We are already looking forward to achieving major victories in 2012."

America failed to learn the lessons of alcohol prohibition.

Lesson #1: Human appetites cannot be legislated.
Lesson #2: Prohibition promotes graft, corruption and violence.
Lesson #3: Prohibition does not work.

marijuana is dangerous in part because it makes the user stupid.

that's why it is sometimes referred to as dope.

we don't require additional stupidity from our citizens.

alcohol is dangerous as well, but that is no reason to legalize another dangerous substance.

it is way less toxic to the individual and to society than alcohol. why not allow legal access to a less toxic substance?

every year in this country approximately 430,000 people die from diseases caused by willful or passive ingestion of tobacco. approximately 100,000 people die from diseases caused by willful consumption of alcohol. since 1914 after the passage of the Harrison Act which placed marijuana on prohibition only 1 person has died from ingesting marijuana. he choked on it because he tried to eat it while being chased by the pigs.

bunzymay you are misled and are misleading others by saying marijuana is addictive.
marijuana is not physically addictive but people can grow dependent on it as they would anything else. coffee, tv, internet, etc. it's 2 different things. marijuana should not be prohibited because of confusion between what an addiction is and a human deficiency to grow a dependence on something.

Marijuana is a dangerous drug. Hmmmm. Ok now let's apply common sense and see what we come up with....
In marijuanas known period of cultivation which is roughly around 2700bc in china and 500 ad in Europe can anyone guess how many people have died from it's usage.... A whopping 0, zip nadda
If you would like to know about other drugs I suggest reading this article

You certainly are entitled to your opinion but you need to have facts before you speak. This is the problem in America, too many ignorant people who do not think rationally and act upon emotion. It's not your fault though... I guess... When stupid people are put in charge of stupid people well... You know. I can't even answer that because I was raised with a very rare commodity ... Common sense. So i emplore you... For the sake of intellectual thought everywhere, please please please research before you speak. Ignorance spreads like wild fire, if the middle ages aren't proof enough I don't know what is. We don't need any more sensationalist propaganda. It's gotten us nowhere except putting good people in jail and ruining lives. You and your ignorance are part of the problem. Educate yourself and become part of the solution.
When you write a paper in college the use of I, you, we and they are forbidden along with opinions. And why is this? Because in a factual assessment of circumstances your opinion DOES NOT MATTER. at least that's what it was when I was in school. Probabaly not anymore in this coddled environment of everyones a winner mentality that has become so popular of late. When I read posts like this it makes me weep when I think of Americas intellectual future.

Don't worry liberals, the homosexual judges in California will overturn it like the homosexual judge overturned Prop 8 for sure.

That would be great.

Although I don't think gays smoke any more or less than breeders so the homosexual part of that comment is really irrelevant.

You can bet big tobacco is against this. The anti smoking league is still on the warpath. Wonder what the numbers are that would switch to the left handed smokes all together....Yep. tobacco road is barely a dirt road anymore due to the huge tax burden. Actually it is really good this failed. No commodity should be forced to pay for real estate and banking screwups.
Arnold apparantly spent the sunset coast into a hole too deep for even mr muscle to get out of. Too bad so sad. Somethings are supposed to fail. Bad doctrine kills political systems. So, now what...Well, possibly start by canceling the income tax and then installing a flat tax on all purchased goods. This wouldn't feed the vices of individuals nor nessisarially have an ill effect on anyone. Except the irs...which could go away and not a soul would cry or miss them. All those employees need to stand in the un enjoyment lines for several years.
A code is not a law, yet we are held to it. Maketh no senceth.
Force the feds out of the picture since clearly "they" have no utter idea how to run a country.
