Downloading the patch

1. Launcher cannot connect to the news server, Game gives Failed to Apply Patch error.

This error may happen due to a variety of reasons. The most common ones are listed below:

  • The system's proxy configuration is incorrect. To fix this, go to Internet Explorer -> Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections tab -> LAN Settings. Once you're there, toggle the Automatically Detect Settings checkbox and apply the setting. Try the Launcher or game again.

  • Internet Explorer is set to not connect. Go to Internet Explorer -> File, then uncheck Work Offline. Try the Launcher or game again.

  • An internet security program is blocking the game files, or is set on a disabled/expired state. Please re-enable it and check the Programs section. If it is expired, you may want to uninstall it and use an alternative program. http://us.blizzard.com/support/article.xml?articleId=20569

Patching

1. You may receive a naming error while patching, such as this one:

Q u o t e:
The patch "enUS\component.wow-enUS.txt" could not be applied. (CRC mismatch: expected 0xf5d2c172, actual 0xa5b71e86.) If this problem persists, you may be able to solve it by uninstalling and then reinstalling the game. If you are unable to correct this problem, please contact Blizzard Technical Support. (BNUpdate::PTCApply)
To check this installation for problems, click the "Repair" button. The Repair tool can automatically fix many update errors.

This will occur when you're missing the Data\patch-3.mpq file and you're at version 3.3.0a. You can try reverting the game if you want but future patches may run into errors. To revert the game, go to your World of Warcraft\Data\ folder and delete the patch.MPQ file. If you have the patch-2.MPQ and patch-3.MPQ files, delete those as well. Go back to the World of Warcraft folder and run the repair utility.

Reverting will be much faster than a full reinstall. A reinstall is needed if this does not fix it.

**************************************************************************************************

2. You may receive a naming error while patching, such as this one:

Q u o t e:
The file "C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Wow.exe.temp" could not be renamed to "C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Wow.exe". If this problem persists, you may be able to solve it by uninstalling and then reinstalling the game. If you are unable to correct this problem, please contact Blizzard Technical Support. (ConflictManager::ResolveConflicts/2)
The file "C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Wow.exe.temp" could not be deleted. (ConflictManager::UncreateObjects)
To check this installation for problems, click the "Repair" button. The Repair tool can automatically fix many update errors.

It seems that an antivirus software (reported ones: NOD32, Security Suite) is blocking the patch from working with the files. Try updating its definition files or try to temporarily turn it off for patching.

**************************************************************************************************

3. You may get an error saying that a Uninstall.xml.temp could not be created, renamed or deleted.

Q u o t e:
The file "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Blizzard Entertainment\World of Warcraft\Uninstall.xml.temp" could not be created. If this problem persists, you may be able to solve it by uninstalling and then reinstalling the game. If you are unable to correct this problem, please contact Blizzard Technical Support. (InstallerFile::Create)

If you are on Windows Vista or 7, please right-click your launcher and click on Run as Administrator. If that doesn't fix the problem, go to the folder that it mentioned and delete the Uninstall.xml file. In this example, it's C:\Program Files\Common Files\Blizzard Entertainment\World of Warcraft\. Start the patch again afterward. If that does not work, go up to the Blizzard Entertainment folder and delete the entire affected folder.

**************************************************************************************************

4. The Launcher disappears at 70%

This issue seems to appear if an antivirus program, like Kaspersky, is blocking the patch from starting up. Try temporarily disabling it for the patch process. If this does not work, you can try to download the patch you need from the mirror links on the bottom post, then try installing it in Safe Mode - http://us.blizzard.com/support/article.xml?articleId=21148

**************************************************************************************************

5. The patcher is waiting for files to close.

This issue happens if one or more of your game files are open. Windows locks it so you can't overwrite it. You need to close them first before the patcher can continue. Try hitting Control+Alt+Delete on your computer. Make sure none of these are running in the Processes tab:

WoW.exe
Launcher.exe
BackgroundDownloader.exe
Repair.exe
WowError.exe

If any of those are running, try ending the task. The patch should continue afterward.

**************************************************************************************************

6. You may see an error such as this while patching:

Q u o t e:
The file "C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Data\enUS\backup-enUS.MPQ.temp" could not be created. If this problem persists, you may be able to solve it by uninstalling and then reinstalling the game. If you are unable to correct this problem, please contact Blizzard Technical Support. (InstallerFile::Create)

Windows Vista and 7 users can usually resolve this issue by right-clicking the Launcher or Blizzard Updater file, then selecting Run as Administrator.

**************************************************************************************************

7. Another copy of the Blizzard Downloader is already downloading that file to that location.

This message may be a result of your Background Downloader. If you see a blue tornado icon on the lower right of your screen, please close it.

**************************************************************************************************

8. You receive the following error while patching:

Q u o t e:
This update requires wow.exe v3.1.3.9947. You have an older version 0.2.0.xxxxx.

This issue will happen if your system registry got the PTR and WOW folders confused. Try right-clicking your game shortcut and run it as an administrator. The Launcher should have access to update your registry key when you do this.

**************************************************************************************************

9. You receive the following error while patching:

Q u o t e:
Wow.exe cannot be found

This issue will happen if your system registry does not have the location to your World of Warcraft folder. Try right-clicking your game shortcut and run it as an administrator. The Launcher should have access to update your registry key when you do this.

Update: 11/9/09's Tools Update patch will now try to write the registry key for you regardless of running it as admin or not as long as you're under a Windows Administrator account. The trick is to get this tools update patch loaded first, which should happen after installing Wrath/3.0.

**************************************************************************************************

10. You may receive a message saying

Q u o t e:
"The file "\base\signaturefile" could not be opened. If this problem persists, you may be able to solve it by uninstalling and then reinstalling the game. If you are unable to correct this problem, please contact Blizzard Technical Support. (InstallerFile::Open)
To check this installation for problems, click the "Repair" button. The Repair tool can automatically fix many update errors.""

This error happens when a System Restore or a backup program restored some old files on the game and it gets confused. If that does not work, you will have to uninstall and reinstall the game.

**************************************************************************************************

11. You may receive a message saying something about

Q u o t e:
PC-HDFiles\____________

Q u o t e:
The patch "pc-game-hdfiles\WowError.exe" could not be applied. (CRC mismatch: expected 0xec8a47a2, actual 0x9e5111c7.) If this problem persists, you may be able to solve it by uninstalling and then reinstalling the game. If you are unable to correct this problem, please contact Blizzard Technical Support. (BNUpdate::PTCApply)
To check this installation for problems, click the "Repair" button. The Repair tool can automatically fix many update errors.

Q u o t e:
The file "\enUS-hdfiles\Data\enUS\realmlist.wtf" could not be opened. If this problem persists, you may be able to solve it by uninstalling and then reinstalling the game. If you are unable to correct this problem, please contact Blizzard Technical Support. (InstallerFile::Open)

Q u o t e:
The patch "pc-game-hdfiles\msvcr80.dll" could not be applied. (Invalid source file size: expected 626688, actual 632656.) If this problem persists, you may be able to solve it by uninstalling and then reinstalling the game. If you are unable to correct this problem, please contact Blizzard Technical Support. (BNUpdate::PTCApply)

This error happens when a System Restore or a backup program restored some old files on the game and it gets confused. Please delete the World of Warcraft folder and reinstall the game. You can also try reverting the game if you want but future patches may run into errors.

**************************************************************************************************

12. An I/O error has occurred. (4)

We're getting reports of this happening on systems that are blocking the Blizzard Downloader. Please configure your security software to allow WoW-3.1.3.9947-to-3.2.0.10192-enUS-downloader.exe access to the internet. If that doesn't work, try this:

Selective Startup:
For Windows XP/ME users:

Click Start and select Run, then type "msconfig" and click OK.
In the General tab:

- Choose Selective Startup
- Disable (uncheck) Load startup items
- Click Services, then check the Hide all Microsoft services,
- Disable the non-Microsoft services
- Click OK and Reboot

For Windows Vista users:
Click Start, All Programs, Accessories and select Run, then type "msconfig" and click OK.
In the General tab:

- Choose Selective Startup
- Disable (uncheck) Load startup items
- Click Services, then check the Hide all Microsoft services,
- Disable the non-Microsoft services
- Click OK and Reboot

Please keep in mind that this will disable all security programs. Please re-enable these after you're done patching.

Game Startups and Crashes

1. World of Warcraft looks like it is starting up, but immediately closes itself without an error message.

This issue seems to be from a service called Advanced Text Services. Instructions for turning it off can be found at http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=16365947252&sid=1

**************************************************************************************************

2. The Launcher will appear, but clicking Play will make it disappear. The game does not start up and is not in Task Manager under the Processes tab.

This issue seems to occur if you lost your permissions to wow.exe or other game-related files. You'll want to check them.

Windows XP:

This seems to come from having an older version of a Norton antivirus program that interferes with permission-related changes. Please check this page:
http://service1.symantec.com/support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2002111407412539

If you have any version of Norton under Norton 2010, please uninstall your version of Norton and install the latest one. Do not reinstall Norton 360. Once that's done, follow these steps to reassign permission back to you - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421

You could also try deleting wow.exe and running the repair utility to restore it along with proper ownership.

If that does not work, you can try using an alternate, free antivirus program and see if that makes a difference. http://us.blizzard.com/support/article.xml?articleId=20569

Once a different one is installed, follow these steps to reassign permission back to you - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421

You could also try deleting wow.exe and running the repair utility to restore it along with proper ownership.

Windows Vista and 7:
Step 1 - Install - http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/add-take-ownership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/
Step 2 - Right-click your World of Warcraft folder and then click Take Ownership.

**************************************************************************************************

3. This message may appear if you run the game:

Q u o t e:
This application has encountered a critical error:

Program: D:\Games\World of Warcraft\WoW.exe
File: DBFilesClient\BattlemasterList.dbc

DBFile errors are usually from old or mismatched game files and will happen after running a backup program, or System Restore. Please delete the World of Warcraft folder and reinstall the game. You can also try reverting the game if you want but future patches may run into errors. To revert the game, go to your World of Warcraft\Data\ folder and delete the patch.MPQ file. If you have a patch-2.MPQ file, delete that as well. Go back to the World of Warcraft folder and run the repair utility.
Keep in mind that if you have the Wrath of the Lich King DVD, that can be used to reinstall the entire game from scratch.
If you have Windows Vista or Windows 7, and your game is installed in the Program Files folder, you may have an old game file somewhere in your VirtualStore folder. Go to the World of Warcraft folder and see if you have a Compatibility Files button on your Windows Explorer window. If you do, check inside and see if you have older stuff there.

**************************************************************************************************

4. The game may state that you have a configuration error of some type while starting it up:

Q u o t e:
"C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Wow.exe
This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem"

This seems to happen for Windows XP users. Try installing and updating the .NET Framework - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=AB99342F-5D1A-413D-8319-81DA479AB0D7&displaylang=en
You may want to run Windows Update after installing these to pick up remaining updates.

Known Issues/Bugs

1. UI and display problems with Intel GMA 965

People using the Intel GMA 965 video card may see UI corruption, missing buttons, swirls or lose their floors. To fix this issue, please check http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=10021047&sid=1&pageNo=2#21

**************************************************************************************************

2. You may experience an Error 134 crash when using an ATI video card, usually marked by an End of File statement in the error message

We have added a new experimental feature to the D3D graphics engine to improve texture management (particularly on Windows XP). This will help you avoid this specific crash. This is currently disabled by default and can be changed by adding the following line to your Config.WTF file:
SET gxApi "d3d9ex"

Add it and save the file.
