For those folks who are confused by the UpNP statements the amazing poster above made you most likely use vista. The wonderful folks at vista renamed UpNP, which is why you can search for it all day long and not find it listed in programs to allow through your windows firewall. UpNP is renamed network discovery by the flamers at windows and is ALWAYS off by default. Here are the steps to turn it on.

1.Click on Start button, then select Control Panel.
2.Click on Network and Internet link, and then click on Network and Sharing Center.
3.You will see that network discovery is off. Click on the corresponding arrow button to expand the section.
4.Click “Turn on network discovery”, and then click Apply. Administrator permission required. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

I hope this helps.

The patch "pc-game-hdfiles\WowError.exe" could not be applied. (Invalid source file size: expected 343184, actual 345232.) If this problem persists, you may be able to solve it by uninstalling and then reinstalling the game. If you are unable to correct this problem, please contact Blizzard Technical Support. Hey guys, I just want to tell you that the microsoft UPnP test might give you a false positive or false negative depending your router. A good way to test if your port is open or automatically opened by UPnP is using Utorrent client.

This application comes with an speed guide test winch allows you to test if port is open and accepting connections and is a great way to test if UPnP is working. I assume that you know that your router is UPnP ready and have this option activated, and also assume that you have not port forwarded World of Warcraft's port 3724.

After Downloading Utorrent, open the application go to preferences » Connections

There you'll find a textbox followed by button "random port", in the text box write 3724, click ok

Now go to Options » SpeedGuide and there click in the button "test if port is forwarded properly", it will lead you to a page like : http://www.utorrent.com/testport?port=3724

Going directly to the page won't work because the application needs to be running and connecting in the port 3724 as explained in the previous steps.

In Options » Connections, you leave checked UpnP por mapping checked for a more accurate result.

after getting the test done, I recommend changing the port # in the text box back to the original or get new random port.

Q u o t e:
I am getting long periods of lag during which i can continue to cast spells - but apart from my own moving around on screen, everything else is frozen. sometimes, the animation will eventually catch up, but inevitably this behaviour leads to disconnection from the game. My internet connection remains intact, but I am now being continually booted about 1 minute after logging into a character. Any character, any realm.

I ran the test you suggested above, and got a tick in every box (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/using/tools/igd/default.mspx Internet Test)

Would you have any other suggestion toward fixing this issue?

Not running any mods
I have deleted WTF/Interface/Cache folders
Same problem with other characters and other realms
Have tried fiddling with network adaptor settings to no avail

I also ran tracert and got this: (not that I know how to read these things...) I have found lots of posts which seem to get stuck on the same hop, but can't manage to resolve the issue.

This post was very helpful. I've been plagued with disconnect issues for the past couple weeks. It started occurring about the same time the last patch went in and seemed to only occur during the evening. I'd disconnect several times a night.

So after reading the original post I checked a few things. I made sure UPnP was working, set up port forwarding on the router, and set up Windows Firewall to allow the WoW related programs and ports through.

Edit...The results of this....it's been a few days. I've had one disconnect since I made the changes. I don't know if it's fixed per se but it's not happening nearly as often.

Get your guildmembers to disable/uninstall GearScore during raids.

Its spammy as hell, and many people can't handle raid data along with GearScore spamming you every .2 seconds (YES, every .2 seconds it scans you or someone near you, and transmits that info)

It spams EVERYONE in your guild, whether you have the addon or not, whether you're in raid or not.

Well, first of all satellite connection is the best connection you can have, know why?, you're not 1 out of 100 other ppl in your neighborhood trying to squeeze through an Ethernet cable buried underground that com-cast has, so that last statement was kinda uneducated guesses...i learned that in my 3rd quarter of itt-tech, I'm in computer network systems...no offense intended though loll...I love your thread BTW man i bookmarked it and as soon as i can stop using this 3rd party wireless network I'm gonna try that out when i can afford to buy a router.and of course i know all about peeping inside of 1...er, as long as it looks like a server of course...lol

I ran all these tests. Seemed like it would do the trick but no it hasn't. When I ran the connectivity test it said that UPnP was being disabled by the firewall. The only firewall I have on is macafee and I cannot find an option for UPnP in it. All listed WoW ports are open. Is there an option for UPnP in macafee for vista? Also these seem to be specific to my gateway laptop since my macafee doesn't look like anyone else's I see. The game runs at about 17-25 fps(which is playable at that point) for about 5-10 minutes then the fps drops to single digits or just stopping completely. This could also be a modem issue if there is a setting for that also. I didn't seem to have this issue until I had my provider reset my modem. The game is unplayable at this rate. I'm tempted to just turn off macafee firewall and try it for a short time just to see if that solves it. If that isn't it then what is left but the modem?

***Edit: Turned off firewall and ran. Fps is still dropping reguardless.

Actually my statement was CORRECT it just left out some info but here it is....

There is 1 (READ IT ONE) main trunk line feeding an ENTIRE Forward Operating Base's (FOB) private internet use (FOR EVERYONE ON THAT BASE) via a satellite connection

The U.S. military have their own dedicated separate satellite bandwith but there are AT LEAST A THOUSAND Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, & Marines using that main trunk line

So yes that connection SUCKS, but if it were JUST HIM having a DEDICATED SAT LINK then yes it would be SUPER SUPER FAST....also please bear in mind this is in IRAQ, not the US

They haven't hired me because of several reasons:

1.) I haven't applied (thank you for the suggestion though)
2.) Generally companies don't like it when you have flunked out of a college and then a community college a year later (that's me....but wait didn't some dude named Bill Gates do the same thing? )
3.) I do support in my FREE TIME as a HOBBY, I have done it on a paid basis on the past and find that I am lot LESS helpful to the people on the internets after having done it all day at the office. Currently I am between jobs but my day job was providing personal protection to residential apartments in Washington, D.C. thus I kinda wanted a hobby to get rid of some of the sick *#@* I saw at work.
