Magic draft prospect watch: Devin Ebanks

Over the next couple of days, we’re taking a look at some players whom the Orlando Magic might select with the 29th overall pick in Thursday’s NBA draft.

For some analysis, I turned to the NBA’s scouting director, Ryan Blake, who was kind enough to speak with me this afternoon about several prospects.

In this entry, we’ll look at Devin Ebanks. He was one of the six players who worked out for the Magic today at RDV Sportsplex.

DEVIN EBANKS
Position: Forward
Height/Weight: 6-9/215
Age: Will turn 21 on Oct. 28
College: West Virginia
2009-10 stats: 12.0 ppg, 8.1 rpg, 2.4 apg, .457 fg%, .770 ft%, .100 3p%

Career highlights: Made the All-Big East third team last season as a sophomore. . . . Led the Mountaineers in rebounding in ‘09-10. . . . Helped lead West Virginia to its first Final Four since 1951 and to 31 wins, the highest single-season total in school history. . . . Posted nine double-figure rebounding games and seven double-doubles last season.

Blake’s take: “Another early entry, obviously. He’s got his size. He’s young at 6-9 and about 215. He’s athletic. As a scorer, he prefers going off the dribble and he’s not afraid to attack the rim. He can, and will, go left and right off the dribble. But he is wiry strong. He is aggressive on both boards. He has a good wingspan and nose for the ball with some good mittens.”

The Orlando Magic worked out potential draft prospects Monday at RDV Sportsplex.

A league source said six players participated. Those players were:

* Xavier guard Jordan Crawford (6 feet 4/195 lbs.),
* West Virginia forward Devin Ebanks (6-9/215),
* New Mexico guard Darington Hobson (6-7/210),
* Washington guard/forward Quincy Pondexter (6-6/225),
* Syracuse guard Andy Rautins (6-4/194) and
* Maryland guard Greivis Vasquez (6-6/200).

The workout was closed to outsiders, including the media.

For now at least, the Magic own the 29th and 59th picks in Thursday’s NBA draft. They likely will use at least one of those picks on a point guard or a wing player, because free agency could take a toll on those positions.

Point guards Anthony Johnson and Jason Williams will become unrestricted free agents on July 1. Shooting guard J.J. Redick is scheduled to be a restricted free agent. Small forward Matt Barnes has said he won’t exercise his player option to play for the Magic in 2010-11; not exercising that option will allow Barnes to become an unrestricted free agent.
