'Cougar Town': Why It's One of Our Favorite Sitcoms

"Cougar Town": Awful title, great show
ABC/ Adam Rose

"Cougar Town" got off to a rocky start with a less-than-compelling premise and a really terrible title. However, somewhere over the course of the first season, this show got really funny and decided to focus on family/friend relationships and have Jules date age-appropriate men. Sure, the title has been rendered irrelevant, but we can live with that if the show continues to entertain us. Here's why it's the sitcom we wish more people watched:

The Cul-De-Sac Crew

This ensemble really works the best when they're teasing each other or doing outlandish things together. It's a casual vibe with wonderfully cutting remarks, and only this particular group of people could possibly get along with each other.

Functional Romantic Dysfunction

While Jules and Bobby didn't work as a couple, they actually still manage to remain civil friends who co-parent and who don't really have a lot of jealousy issues about the fact that Jules is dating their mutual friend Grayson. Even though they're totally immature about so many things, they actually manage to be mature about what matters.

Penny Can

The girls thought this game was stupid when they first saw it, and admittedly so did we. However, upon repeated usage, this is one of our favorite recurring gags, used to settle arguments, or just to pass the time. Shooting a penny into a tin can from various distances. So simple. So genius.

Barb

In the grand tradition of Mona from "Who's the Boss?" and Blanche from "The Golden Girls," Barb is a sassy older lady obsessed with sex. She's around solely for comic relief and to dole out snippy, innuendo-filled one-liners. In short, she's amazing, and her brief appearances are always welcomed.

Wine

No one in the "cul-de-sac crew" has ever been able to say no to a glass of red wine. In fact, most of their social interactions involve alcohol of some sort. And you've got to appreciate Jules, who doesn't understand how people can get more than two glasses of wine from one bottle.

Children We Tolerate

There's a baby on this show, but it isn't bogged down in the realities of toddler parenthood. In fact, we rarely even see him, which is refreshing. And Travis, well, he's a teen, but he's in college now — plus, he's possibly the only truly sane person on this show.

Odd Modes of Transportation

Only Bobby could get away with driving a golf cart as his main mode of transportation, and living on a boat that is permanently parked ... and lacks indoor plumbing.

Seriously Ridiculous

While the show is wildly over the top, sometimes it does deal with some serious issues — being a bad parent, relying on your ex for money, breakups, etc. — but doesn't dwell on them. For instance, no one taking Bobby seriously was dealt with while he was wearing a Halloween costume that made him look windblown. Get us teary, but then hit us with a joke so that we don't have to admit that we're crying over a silly sitcom.
