Nick Kettle for RI State Senate 2010

On the Issues

ABORTION-I am pro life. However as a republican I believe in less government which means the government should not legislate what people do with there bodies.

DEFICIT- With a state deficit ballooning at 220 million we need to cut spending in order for our state to thrive as well as cut taxes. This means cutting government to help restore liberty along with economic freedom. With less government regulation the poor will be able to rise from poverty.

DRUG POLICY- I believe that drugs are harmful the human body and I myself have never taken illegal drugs. However I believe the Government should not legislate what people should do with there bodies unless it causes harm to others, the only drug I am in support of decriminalizing is Marijuana. The state spends thousands if not millions to prosecute people who are not harming others and tying up the courts and prisons

ENERGY -Providence and Washington’s bureaucratic regulations, corporate subsidies, and excessive taxation have made it virtually impossible for the market to produce new forms of cheap and clean energy. Companies have become more concerned with hiring lobbyists than they have with hiring scientists and engineers. Is it really surprising then that we’re in an energy crisis?  As for the off shore wind project off of Block Island I believe the Government should stay out of this issue but I will say for the community of Block Island should approve of it before anything should go forward.

FEDERAL RESERVE- The blame is going around for the current financial crisis. Many are blaming Wall St. and Capitalism and it is surprising no one is blaming big Government. No one in the media has discussed the role of the Federal Reserve System. For too long the Federal Reserve has operated behind a shroud of secrecy—as State Senator I would propose legislation to encourage Washington to take action against this secretive agency. I want to make sure that all Rhode Islander’s understand the dangers of unsound monetary policy that the Founding Fathers warned future generations about and shed light on this secretive organization.

GUN RIGHTS- I am a firm believer in the second amendment. Guns allow people to defend themselves and hunt making themselves self sufficient. The founders knew an armed society is a safe society.

HEALTH CARE -Few realize that Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs), the companies that drive a wedge between the patient and his doctor, were a product of federal legislation. The HMO Act of 1973 essentially granted privileges to certain corporations and this led to a distortion of the market. This has caused higher prices, less coverage, and more bureaucracy. This is what happens when Big Government manages health care.

When the costs go up the government makes it virtually impossible for the needy in this country to buy Health coverage. But this was not the case before government intervention. Just as very few in this country go without shoes or food so too would few go without health care if it weren’t for the government's intervention.

I believe it is time our state to provide better health care for all and recent heath care legislation does not help but will only hurt the poor. I would propose legislation that would nullify the law and create legislation that would have free market solutions to health care that would be cheaper and better for all Rhode Islanders.

ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION- I do not support amnesty. Those who come here should respect our laws. I support legal immigration and recognize that those who seek the freedom to make a life better for themselves; which enriches our State and Nation. I support state's Rights and believe that what Arizona is doing is a viable option and Rhode Island should go in the direction of Arizona if we would like to fix Immigration.

PRIVACY AND LIBERTY- the Founding Fathers warned of a Federal Government bent on usurping the power, rights, and privacy of its States and citizens. In the last nine years, the Federal Government has expanded the scope of its power at an alarming rate, while ignoring the Constitution which was meant to restrain the Federal Government. They have created a national ID card that Rhode Island refused to participate in but a new ID card is coming and would like all threats to civil liberties nullified such as the Patriot Act and Military Commissions Act of 2006.

SMALL BUSINESS- Small Business is the life blood of the States economy the State Government is putting the pressure on owners with increased fee's and Regulation forcing people to be laid off or even businesses to shut down because it is unaffordable to operate in Rhode Island. We do not need to look far to find what works. IN New Hampshire they have 7% unemployment which is not good but compared to Rhode Island's 12% what is New Hampshire doing that Rhode Island is not?  Less taxes, less regulation and less fees allows Business's to be more productive and hire and retain more employees. To fix the jobs crisis you need less government spending not more.

TAXES- Lowering taxes certainly benefits all of us. It gives working men and women the ability to take control of their own lives. It allows people to spend money the way they see fit. It allows business owners to invest in their companies, pay their employees, and create new jobs. Lower taxes encourages spending, saving, and investing this is all necessary for a healthy economy.

TERM LIMITS- I myself am going to hold myself to term limit of only two terms. I believe we have a current crisis at the State House from politicians being elected over and over. I would also propose a Constitutional amendment creating term limits for legislators.
