Afonso Couto’s funeral today
The body of Afonso Couto has been returned to Macau and his funeral will be held this evening, at 6.30 pm, at the Saint Lazarus Church. After the funeral mass, the funeral proceeds to the Saint Miguel Catholic Cemetery.
The son of Macau racing driver André Couto passed away two weeks ago in Portugal after a prolonged battle against leukaemia. The seven-year-old Macau resident was at São João Oncological Hospital in Oporto, where he had been treated since November 2009. A compatible donor for Afonso was found last February and the bone narrow transplant was done in May. However, in September, his health condition worsened as the disease returned.
Afonso was diagnosed with leukaemia last year and the aggressive nature of the disease made it necessary for a bone marrow transplant. An extensive campaign was launched to find a matching donor for Afonso and quickly spread to Portugal and many other countries.
