Pray for our Government

Pray for our Government

When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn. Prov. 29:2

There is a reason why the approval rating of the governor of Illinois is down to 7%--not that anyone should govern by approval ratings. The Illinois House has proceeded with impeachment hearings, and are waiting to find out what evidence they can use from the special prosecutor in their proceedings. Our governor has been arrested and will be undergoing trial by the Feds, for trying to sell a U.S. Senate seat.

It is no wonder that the Apostle Paul wrote in 1 Timothy 2:1-4,"I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; 2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peacable life in all godliness and honesty. 3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; 4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

President-Elect Obama does not hold the same values as most Christians, and has expressly told me, "Reverend, you're a really nice guy, but you and I don't agree on anything." And he's right--we don't. The direction that the federal government wants to take us will be contrary to the Scriptures, and probably bring some religious oppression in the forms of federal "hate-crimes" legislation and "employment non-discrimination".

In the light of all of this, we need to pray--trusting that God will work in and through all those in government. At the same time, we have a wonderful message of a Savior who gave Himself for our sins, and offers a new life to all who believe. The battles we face are not really any different than the battles faced down through the centuries. Fear does not come from God, for "God hath not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, and love, and of a sound mind. In 2009, please remember to pray for our governor, our new general assembly, our new president, and the new seated Congress.

Thank you for the your support and encouragement for the last 16 years, while I have had the privilege of representing both you and our Lord Jesus Christ to the General Assembly of Illinois.
