New LRT Cars Start in Regular Service

January 26, 2009

Customers traveling on the LRT on Tuesday, January 27 are in for a treat as three new SD160 Light Rail Vehicles are added into regular service starting at 6:07 a.m.

The three cars will be connected to form one train that will be scheduled in with the other trains currently providing service on the line. New cars and existing U2 light rail cars will operate as separate train units because the electrical couplers are different and the cars have slightly different performance characteristics.

A total of 37 new SD160 cars are being delivered to Edmonton to provide service on the South LRT Extension to Century Park and increase capacity on the existing Clareview to Health Sciences line. More new cars will be scheduled into service as they complete their certification tests. The cars cost $3.8 million each.
