Snowmen at Night, by Caralyn Buehner

Ever wonder what snowmen do at night? Word from Caralyn Buehner is that they have a grand ole time sledding, ice skating and playing baseball. (Though not mentioned, the snow-women joining in the fun.) Warm and joyous illustrations move the rhyming text along. This is a fun one for preschool storytime, especially as a snowy day turns slightly slushy. I’d recommend reading through the rhyme scheme before reading it aloud to a group, though – a couple of those lines are pretty tight.

Ruby Holler, by Sharon Creech

If you know someone looking for a fun and warm hearted read this winter, I recommend Sharon Creech’s new book. It’s the ultimate orphan story, complete with a nasty orphanage, buried treasure, and an eccentrically endearing couple who find themselves playing host to Florida and Dallas, the “Trouble Twins.” Suggested for those in upper elementary or middle school…and definitely for youth librarians.

.kids.us

President Bush has signed the Dot-Kids Implementation and Efficiency Act of 2002, thus creating a “new child-friendly area of the web” that “will let libraries, schools, companies, and other agencies set up sites targeting children aged 13 and under. Linking users outside the ‘.kids.us’ domain will be prohibited, as will chat rooms and other forms of interpersonal communication, unless a site sponsor can guarantee that the interaction will be monitored carefully.” (Walter Minkel, Library Hotline 12/9/02). Neustar, the company managing the site is in the process of determining inclusion standards, and management policies. More info on this as it becomes available.
