The Eighth Nile Basin Trust Fund Meeting Ends in Kampala Version imprimable

The Eighth Nile Basin Trust Fund (NBTF) Meeting was held in Kampala, Uganda, on 12 November 2010.  It was opened by H.E. Alemayehu Tegenu, Minister of Water and Energy of Ethiopia and Chair of the Nile Council of Ministers.

Participants were representatives of African Development Bank, Canada, Denmark, European Union, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway , Sweden , UNDP, the United Kingdom, the United States, the Worldbank, and the Nile Basin Initiative.

Organized by the Worldbank in collaboration with the Nile Basin Initiative, the purpose of the meeting was to review the progress of implementation of NBI’s activities planned during the past year as well as discussing financial requirements of the NBI projects including challenges faced.  Participants also reflected on the financial sustainability of the Nile Basin Initiative given the eminent closure of the Trust Fund in 2013 and the phasing out of the three year NBI Institutional Strengthening Project in 2012.

Ato Tefera Beyene, Chair of the Nile Technical Advisory Committee and Head of Transboundary Rivers Administration Directorate in Ethiopia, opened the Fifth NILE-TAC and Development Partners Strategic Dialogue at the Speke Resort Centre in Munyonyo, Uganda.

The two-day dialogue (10-12 November 2010) which aims at strengthening TAC-Development Partners engagement and providing strategic guidance and technical direction on key issues to the Nile Basin Initiative.

The meeting brings together representatives from Africa Development Bank, Canada, Denmark, European Union, Finland, France, Germany, Norway , Sweden , United Nations Development Programme, United Kingdom, the United States of America, and the Worldbank.  Members of the Nile Technical Advisory Committee from the nine riparian States as well as staff members of the Nile Basin Initiative attended the meeting.

Dr. Wael M. Khairy Takes Office as Executive Director of the Nile Basin Initiative Version imprimable

Dr. Wael M. Khairy has taken office as the new Executive Director of the Nile Basin Initiative – Secretariat (NBI-SEC) in Entebbe, Uganda; effective 1st September 2010. 

In a brief address during the handover ceremony held at the Secretariat, Dr. Wael noted, “My appointment comes in a very important and challenging period in the history of evolving regional cooperation among the Nile Basin countries.  But it comes also while the birth of the new Nile Basin Commission is underway.”

“Combating water shortage, poverty, environmental degradation, and climate change should continue to be the key drivers of the Nile Basin countries to continue their marathon of regional cooperation for the good of our people,” Dr Wael said.

During the 18th ordinary Nile Council of Ministers’ meeting recently (26-27 June, 2010) held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the Ministers approved Egypt’s proposal for the incoming Executive Director of the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) Secretariat. Dr. Wael M. Khairy, Dr. Khairy has gained experience during his career for more than 19 years (1990-present) in various water resources and development as well as environmental Engineering related fields. He works as a Director of the National Office of Egypt, Nile Basin Initiative in which he manages -as a National Focal Point- the planning and preparation of all regional projects/programs under the umbrella of the Nile Basin Initiative inside Egypt and coordinates for those projects region-wide among other NFPs in the nine Nile riparian countries as well as the NBI secretariat.

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia - The Nile Council of Ministers (NILE-COM) in charge of Water Affairs from the nine Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) member countries has successfully concluded its 18th ordinary meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The purpose of the two day (26-27 June) meeting organized under the theme: ‘Working together for a better future’ was to review progress of the activities of NBI and approve the work plan and budget for the fiscal year 2010/2011.  This is in addition to announcing changes in the positions of NILE-COM chair and Executive Director of the NBI Secretariat, respectively.
