I found some information about the 98/05 bayonet type:

I was wondering, does this one fits on the 88s? I would assume not, because it says it was for the 98. However I believe I once saw a picture of a German soldier carrying a gew88 with a bayonet in the same shape as the 98/05.

Yes they all(G98's with out muzzle rings)fit. I have also seen a pic with a 88 with a 98/05 on it. I think the pic I saw said that they were rear guard.
Its not the best fit ,it's a little floppy, same goes for the 98na quillion back bayonet.

It will fit, but as Phil says, it's a tad sloppy.

S98/05aA with the partial muzzle rings are also loose, but a better fit. It was made for the G 98 rifle & also used on the carbine, but they were used with Gew 88's during WWI. Mostly with Pioneers, Railway troops, Recruit Depots, and Landsturm units not serving on the front lines.

Nice scabbard and tassel in the shot! Interesting way he has done the sling also. What is the triangular pouch on the soldier's belt?

I love that photo, one of my favorites! He is from an Eisenbahn regiment I believe. Not sure exactly what kind of pouch that is, has me shooting sparks out of my ears for years. Rolling Eyes

Beautiful shot! I have tried my 98/05 on my Gewehr 88. It fits but is not secure. I would not want to go charging into battle with it fixed on my 88 as it would surely take the fore end with it in a bayonet fight.

Is this a pre-war or early war shot ? The scabbard appears to be leather with the steel end fittings.

True, the 98/05 bayonet and any other bayonet designed or the M98's long lug bayonet attachment will fit the Gew88 and the Gew71 and the Gew71/84 but it cant be actually used to bayonet anyone, the bayonet will twist off of the lug or it will only twist loosing a great deal of the thrusting force. On the 88, 71 and 71/84 must have a muzzlering to do the job properly.

That being said, photos of soldiers armed with pre-98 rifles with Sg98, Sg98/05, Sg14, Sg84/98, etc. bayonets are common so they may have been issued together or one or the other may be photographer's studio props. However, in this case of the Eisenbahn soldier shown, it appears likely that the soldier was issued an 88 with the later bayonet.

Wish I knew what the thing on his belt is, I don't think it is a pouch. At first I thought it was his feldmutz (cap) but on extreme close up it doesn't appear to be.

Nabs, you are correct, it is an early war shot. Pre-War, the railroad units had been armed with Gew98 but rear echelon units like them pretty quickly lost the 98s. Maybe they kept the 98 specific bayonets?

Dead give away for a war time photo is the Filz or felt ersatz spiked helmet. These were being made after August 1914 due to shortages of leather for the helmets.

Didn't even look at the helmet at first, thanks for pointing that out.
