Bird Flu Hype: Vaccines

COMMENT: The *real* problem is that they are not correcting the underlying issue: The Sick Terrain of the birds and the environment. Read this for more information.

October 31, 2006: New bird flu strain foils vaccine The new variant has become the primary version of the bird flu in several provinces of China and has spread to Hong Kong, Laos, Malaysia and Thailand, the researchers report. It is being called H5N1 Fujian-like, to distinguish it from earlier Hong Kong and Vietnam variants. "We don't know what is driving this," report co-author Dr. Robert Webster of St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., said. New vaccines will have to be developed, he said. Many scientists are going to think the vaccination program encouraged the virus to evolve resistance, he added.

Nov. 17, 2006: Thailand mulls plan to set up bird flu vaccine factory.  In a bid to keep Thailand well-prepared for possible recurrence of another outbreak of bird flu, Thailand will study the possibility to set up a factory to produce avian influenza or bird flu vaccine.

COMMENT: Vaccination project for "70 of the world's poorest countries." It would be interesting to see which countries are targeted and what the natural resources are in those countries. Who will benefit? Can anyone spell 'depopulation'? Vaccination is the weapon of choice....

Oct 2, 2006: Bond to fund vaccines in poor countries takes to the road.  Six European countries plan to raise up to $1 billion in the international bond markets next week to buy life-saving vaccines for millions of children in the world's poorest countries. The scheme is a pilot for a wider bond financing project that could double rich countries' development aid to $100 billion a year but which has failed to get the backing of the United States.

Funds raised will support immunisation projects against killer diseases such as measles and polio in 70 of the world's poorest countries. "The benefit of this concept is that it allows development bodies to front-load resources," said Christopher Egerton-Warburton, executive director at Goldman Sachs which is managing the sale along with Deutsche Bank. "With immunisation, there is clearly work that needs to be done today."

Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates has also welcomed the bond initiative and his Gates Foundation has contributed $750 million to the vaccination project. Investor presentations will be held in New York on Tuesday and on the U.S. West Coast later this week, according to banking sources. The European leg of the roadshow will kick off in Switzerland on Monday, move to Frankfurt on Tuesday, Paris on Wednesday and London on Thursday. The bonds will have a top-notch triple A credit rating and are expected to carry a four- or five-year maturity. Final terms and conditions will depend on investor feedback and market conditions.

COMMENT: Cell-based vaccines are on the way. Still 4-5 years out, per the manufacturer, we will soon be injecting shots that contain cells from the eyes of aborted fetal tissue (PER.C6) and cells from caterpiller eggs (FLUBlok) into our children. The only thing these "mad scientists" seem to care about are low infection rates. Staggering increases in asthma, autism, diabetes and cancer are of no concern and, OF COURSE, have nothing to do with the vaccine. For proof that these conditions ARE related to vaccines, see Chapter 9 of my book, FOWL! Bird Flu: It's Not What You Think

Sept. 29, 2006: A year ago (Oct 2005) it was reported that Sanofi's cell-based vaccine production was still in the pre-clinical phase and could take four or five years before reaching completion. This assumes completion of phase 3, the final stage of testing required by the Food and Drug Administration. To avoid a pandemic the government would forgo its usual regulatory requirements. On September 29, Sanofi Pasteur, opened its first safety study of a cell-based influenza vaccine using PER.C6 cells. Researchers in South Carolina and Missouri enrolled 100 healthy volunteers, half of whom will get the regular flu shot and the other half Sanofi's experimental cell-based one.

COMMENT: Crucell is a Dutch pharamceutical company that has created a cell line called PER.C6 cells...made from the retina of aborted fetal tissues. The adjuvant in this vaccine is unknown but could easily be MF-59, the squalene-based substance that has crippled both experimental animals and Gulf War Vets. For detailed information about cell line technology and vaccine adjuvants, see "FOWL! Bird Flu: It's Not What You Think.
September 19, 2006: Sanofi tests vaccine for 'other' bird flu   Sanofi pasteur Monday began a phase 1 trial of a vaccine for the H7N1 bird flu, which may pose as much of a pandemic threat as H5N1.  "While most vaccine development has focused on H5N1 strains, avian H7 containing viruses remain a significant pandemic threat and have caused infections in humans in Europe over the last three years," Sanofi said in a statement.

The vaccine is based on a modified version of a strain of H7N1 that caused outbreaks in Italian poultry in 1999. It was produced using the cell-based technology of Sanofi's partner Crucell. The phase 1 trial, which is taking place at the University of Bergen in Norway, will involve 60 healthy adults who will receive the vaccine with or without an adjuvant.

COMMENT: It will be interesting to see if they advocate this vaccine made for chickens in humans.
September 14, 2006: Vietnam to use locally-made bird flu vaccines in 2007.   Vietnam is expected to use domestically-made vaccines against bird flu viruses among fowls early next year, after successfully testing them on chickens and white-winged ducks, local newspaper Labor reported Wednesday. The Central Veterinary Institute is now determining suitable volume of each dose of the vaccines, and completing procedures for standard recognitions, including those relating to safety and production process, the newspaper quoted the institute's director Truong Van Dung as saying. Vietnam has planned to build 64 freezing facilities in all cities and provinces nationwide to preserve the vaccines. The country, which has recently completed this year's first batch of bird flu vaccination among fowls nationwide, plans to finish the second batch by late November.

COMMENT: One of many problems? Once vaccinated, the bird will test positive for an antibody for H5N1 virus. So.....is the bird infected with the virus OR is the bird "immune" to the virus? This is the same problem that has occurred in the thinking of an HIV vaccine. This is not going to resolve the problem......and the vaccine will make the birds sicker in the long run.
September 11, 2006: Live bird flu virus vaccine protects animals-study.  Three experimental vaccines using live but weakened versions of the H5N1 bird flu virus appeared to protect animals from infection, and might offer a way to stockpile vaccines ahead of a pandemic, U.S. researchers said on Monday. They said the approach was already being tested in people, and might provide the start of a repository of vaccines against various potential strains of pandemic influenza.
"We have been developing live, attenuated influenza virus vaccines because they have properties that make them attractive vaccines for the prevention of pandemic influenza in humans," the researchers wrote in the online journal Public Library of Science-Medicine. Unlike some of the other experimental vaccines being developed, it takes only a single dose of a live, weakened vaccine to stimulate a good immune response, the researchers said

COMMENT: It looks like the assumption is that everyone will WANT this vaccine.....what if you are on the "priority list" and you don't want the junk injected into your body?
September 9. 2006: State Formula Determines Who Gets Shots During Bird Flu Pandemic   California health officials have settled on a formula for resolving a wrenching question that would arise if a bird flu pandemic strikes the state: who gets doses of scarce vaccine. The state did not draw up a hierarchy of Californians who would most need inoculation, though it hints at groups most vulnerable. "Very young persons, elderly adults, and persons with underlying disease are at high risk of complications during interpandemic influenza outbreaks," it states. Instead of setting out a list of likely candidates, the state developed a scoring system that the report says "produces a rank-ordered list of target groups prioritized for influenza vaccination." The formula is designed to be flexible enough to accommodate variables in a pandemic.

COMMENT: Whole cell influenza vaccines have not been used because they have been found to cause fevers and increased inflammation. The side effect profile of this vaccine is not discussed, only that it induces the much maligned "protective antibody" level.
September 17, 2006: New bird flu shot offers hope in event of pandemic A prototype Chinese vaccine against H5N1 bird flu has raised hopes of providing swift protection to hundreds of millions of people if the virus ever mutates into a form capable of creating a pandemic, British medical journal The Lancet says in its latest edition.  Present H5N1 vaccines are thought unlikely to have much effect against such a strain. The manufacturer is Beijing-based pharmaceutical firm Sinovac Biotech, which jointly developed the innoculation with China's Ministry of Science and Technology and its Center for Disease Control and Prevention. In an online review of the work, British infectious-diseases specialist Iain Stephenson said the big advantage of the Chinese design was its successful use of a whole virus - rather than parts of it - to stimulate an immune response.

COMMENT: "Suitable vaccines" from Italy and China  have been used in poultry across the continent. In an attempt to eradicate a virus, what will be the condition of the birds? Will they be fit to eat?
September 7, 2006: Vietnam to vaccinate white-winged ducks against bird flu.  Vietnam will decide whether to vaccinate white-winged ducks against bird flu virus or not by the end of this week after successful trial use of Italian vaccination, local media reported Wednesday. Over 80 percent of white-winged ducks being vaccinated against bird flu virus strain H5N9 in the trial vaccination have developed immunity ability....The result is of importance since Vietnam, which has already vaccinated chickens and ducks nationwide, currently has yet to find suitable products to vaccinate its white-winged duck population of nearly 10 million. If deciding to vaccinate white-winged ducks nationwide, Vietnam will import vaccines of Italian firm Merial, the newspaper said.

COMMENT: Will they EVER "get" that vaccinations are not going to stop the problem? The birds will get sicker, the food supply will become more contaminated...and the toxic environment will persist, recycling the problem. When will the media WAKE UP to the fact that this is an environmental problem? Everyone should buy a copy of my book, FOWL! Bird Flu: It's Not What You Think and donate a copy to their favorite journalist and editor!
September 5, 2006: Indonesia to vaccinate 300 million poultry  The Indonesian government will press ahead with plans to vaccinate some 300 million poultry from the bird flu virus despite fears by some health officials that vaccines are not effective, a local report said Tuesday.
The plan will be done in stages with 60 million doses being prepared for vaccinations beginning this month and running through December, The Jakarta Post reported.

COMMENT: The CDC says that the vaccine has to be an "exact match" to be effective. Recently, because of the problems of developing an H5N1 vaccine, the claim has been that if the virus is "close" that is "good enough to protect." They can't have it both ways.

Sept 1, 2006: Akzo Nobel acquires EU licence for its H5N2 bird flu vaccine Latest News | News | Hemscott  Akzo Nobel NV said that its subsidiary Intervet has been granted a licence to sell and supply its Nobilis Influenza H5N2 vaccine in the European Union. The vaccine, although different from the infamous H5N1 bird flu vaccine, should protect birds against the H5N1 field strain, especially during autumn and winter, Akzo Nobel said.

COMMENT: The tests that need to be carried out are the effect of vaccine-induced antibodies on stoppingg--or preventing--an infection. The presence of antibodies is NOT synonomous with prevention of disease.
August 31, 2006:  http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/HKG368148.htm Questions surround China bird flu vaccine. Government-backed Beijing Sinovac Biotech Co. said this week it had developed a H5N1 vaccine for humans, using a strain of the virus that had been found in recent years in Vietnam. In the first clinical trial that ended in June, 120 volunteers were injected with the experimental vaccine and none showed "serious adverse reactions". Their blood and urine showed the vaccine was safe for human use, Sinovac said in a statement. Four different dosages of the vaccine were used, but the one with 10 micrograms appeared to be most effective, stimulating 78.3 percent of protective antibodies. The company gave no other details on the vaccines. But an expert greeted the news with caution and asked if independent laboratories had carried out tests for antibodies.

COMMENT: Culling is treating a symptom.....politicians need to look deeper, particularly in Vietnam.
August 26, 2006: Bird flu detected once more in Vietnam This month Vietnam saw another instance of a duck carrying the H5N1 avian flu virus, which led to large numbers of poultry being culled. There is now panic regarding the resurgence of the disease after a year of relative calm with no such incidents. This report is particularly worrisome since it coincides with detected bird flu cases in the neighboring countries of China and Thailand.

COMMENT: When will they ever figure it out? Antibodies do not keep you from getting sick and natural infection gives life-time protection. This is true for chickens and it is true for humans. AND what is even more important--but less popular--is that with a non-toxic, healthy terraine, neither get sick despite exposure.
August 17, 2006: Bird flu vaccination can ‘worsen spread’  Vaccinating poultry flocks against bird flu could make the spread of deadly strains such as H5N1 worse, Scottish scientists have found. An Edinburgh University study concluded that, even though the available vaccines are effective on individual birds, the disease is likely to spread unless more than 95% of a flock has been protected.  The paper, published in the journal Nature, is the first to quantify how incomplete vaccination of flocks can contribute to the undetected spread of the disease.

"Silent spread" occurs because immunised birds can still catch and pass on avian flu, but without presenting any symptoms.
Therefore, as protection levels rise in a vaccinated flock, it becomes ever harder to detect the spread of avian flu, simply because fewer birds die. The result is increasing amounts of bird flu virus contaminating the birds' surroundings without farmers realising it. The UK government's fears appear to be borne out by the new study, led by Dr Nick Savill, of the university's centre for infectious diseases.

COMMENT: And here in lies the rub of ALL vaccines: once vaccinated, an antibody is created. When an antibody titer is measured, is the titer (+) because you are immune, OR because you are chronically infected.....???

August 10, 2006: Illegal bird flu vaccine use worries officials  BANGKOK: With the illegal use of bird flu vaccines in the kingdom confirmed, Thailand's Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry has appealed to farmers nationwide to observe the law, explaining that vaccination could reduce the effectiveness of practices to control the spread of the deadly virus.  Vice Minister for Agriculture was affirmed about the illegal use of bird flu vaccine in poultry, mostly in egg-producing hens and free-range ducks, but it is quite impossible to conduct blood tests to prove which fowl has been vaccinated.

July 28, 2006: The West Australian GSK, the biggest drugs maker in Europe, said tests of its vaccine for H5N1 bird flu showed more than 80 per cent of volunteers dosed with 3.8mg of its active ingredient got a strong immune response. GlaxoSmithKline said it identified and patented a substance that boosts the vaccine's effectiveness about a 20th of the current dose, which could stretch the scarce supply of vaccines about 20-fold.

COMMENT: Wouldn't vaccinating the organic flocks with a marginally effective vaccine negate the flocks from being "organic"?
July 20, 2006 - Protect against bird flu - Farmers Weekly - "A truly rational government would acknowledge that preventative vaccination is the most effective method of combating avian influenza in the modern world and would now be preparing to vaccinate all outdoor and organic flocks......We should not vaccinate poultry in advance of an avian influenza outbreak because of the well documented limitations of the vaccines currently available."

July 2006 - General vaccination of children against influenza? - journal article (Acta Paediatrica) - "Due to the high incidence of influenza in children, general vaccination has been discussed. There are, however, reasons to believe that general vaccination of children will not solve the influenza problem because influenza vaccines induce type-specific immunity of short duration. Conclusion: Vaccination of several cohorts of children will be a tremendous commitment, probably with little hope of success in decreasing the morbidity and spread of influenza."

COMMENT: Breaking all the rules, WHO officials now say that nearly "any flu shot will do" to protect from bird flu....Doesn't have to be a match, doesn't even have to be close. Just give them a shot...any shot....Until we can get the mega-shot that will cover everything. For those of you who have never read Michael Palmer's book, FATAL, now might be a good time to do so.
"People are taking pre-pandemic vaccination seriously," says Derek Smith at the University of Cambridge. In May, a meeting of scientists and manufacturers at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland, recommended the development of vaccines that could be used to inoculate people before a pandemic takes hold.
These, they said, must have long-lasting effects, and be "broad-spectrum" enough to work against whatever pandemic virus emerges. Several novel vaccines that do both are now close to testing in humans. They include the addition of immunity-stimulating chemicals called adjuvants, vaccines made of DNA instead of the virus itself, and perhaps the ultimate - a vaccine that protects against every kind of flu.

COMMENT: They will be using vaccines made for chickens on humans...ugh!
Vaccinating people against H5N1 before a pandemic starts is not yet a practical possibility, because not enough vaccine is available. This is partly because all the vaccine factories are being used to make vaccine for ordinary flu. There is, however, massive global capacity for making flu vaccine for chickens, and in April the WHO held a meeting to explore the possibility of using these facilities to make human vaccine. It concluded that the manufacturing processes and standards are not that different, and it should be possible to divert some plants. A spokesman for the International Federation for Animal Health said that companies were unlikely to do it before a pandemic actually starts. Big animal-vaccine manufacturers from Mexico and China were more enthusiastic.

June 3, 2006: The Observer | Focus | Why I'm testing the bird flu jab Why would anyone put themselves on a clinical trial, knowing that every new therapy carries risks? Companies such as Baxter International Inc., GlaxoSmithKline PLC, Aventis Pasteur, which is expanding its vaccine plant in Monroe County, and others developing vaccines also are considered potential good investments by some experts. The companies are starting to land contracts to produce stockpiles of experimental avian flu vaccines that may never be used.  After Baxter landed a contract in February from the United Kingdom to produce 2 million dosages of a cell-based vaccine, analysts who follow the company were optimistic about Baxter's prospects to land even more contracts.

COMMENT: Good grief!! will they make up their minds? The CDC has maintained for YEARS that if a virus is not a "match" the vaccine is "ineffective." This means that changing the viruses in the annual flu shot is NOT NECESSARY as the "drifts" should be "close enough" to be have an "effect," by their definition. Hopefully, this type of mixed rhetoric will be useful to stop the flu  vaccine program all together.
San Jose Mercury News/Associated Press Even if a vaccine is not a perfect match to whatever strain of bird flu becomes a pandemic, an assertive vaccination campaign at the beginning of an outbreak would still be the most effective response, a study concludes. A vaccine that is a poor match as well as treatment with an antiviral could help slow the spread of the disease, researchers said after studying computer models of flu spread.

Now, preventive vaccination could be allowed based on the risk and analysis of the risk. It's an option that could be considered," he said."

COMMENT: The "leaders" should read the literature. Recent studies have shown the ineffectiveness of the flu shot in both the elderly and in infants. In addition, a report last week stated only 38% of healthcare workers get a flu shot.--REFUSE ALL FLU SHOTS!

Jan 28: Should flu shots be mandatory? canadaeast.com - DG Health - Life "When you use the word mandatory, it really raises the hair behind everyone's neck," said Silas, president of the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions. "Your best bet for success is to
educate your people and make it available and easy to get and they'll get it."

December 31, 2005: CIDRAP >> H5N1 avian flu viruses: What's in a name? As the virulent H5N1 virus continues to evolve and kill poultry in Eurasia, Halvorson predicted, scientists may turn toward a hitherto unthinkable option: a live influenza vaccine for poultry. Such vaccines use a live but weakened form of flu virus..."People are now saying we've got to attack this with everything at our disposal, and that'll have to include a live vaccine.....The door is open now for a live H5 vaccine in birds." ...live viruses don't have to be injected into each bird individually; they can be put into drinking water or sprayed into the air in a chicken coop. That way, hundreds or thousands of birds can be immunized quickly.

November 22, 2005 - Pigs are a worry in avian flu situation - Radio Iowa - "Senne says the pigs have been linked to some past disease outbreaks -- but he says it doesn't seem to be as big a factor now. He says there's less emphasis on pigs being a mixing vessel today than there was 10 to 15 years ago. But Senne says the potential is still there and that's why workers in the swine industry are encouraged to get vaccines for the traditional flu so they don't infect pigs."

insurance. With each shot costing about $100, "that's a lot of money to shell out for one shot."

But the company, which employs about 1,200 at its manufacturing campus in Sanford, would be happy to fill and finish avian flu shots, said company spokesman Chris Garland."

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, bridging the interests of public health and the drug industry, is opening a two-day meeting today at Emory University in Atlanta called "Universal Vaccination Against Influenza -- Are We Ready?" where experts will ponder the need for a new paradigm. "The best preparation for a possible influenza pandemic is ... the need for vaccination, with a goal toward universal immunization before a pandemic arrives," said David Williams, who heads the Sanofi's vaccine unit.

Vaccines for pandemic influenza. Informal meeting of WHO, influenza vaccine manufacturers, national licensing agencies, and government representativeson influenza pandemic vaccines

SUMMARY REPORT, 11-12 November 2004 Geneva, Switzerland

Page 5:  All manufacturers should develop internal contingency plans to expedite the switch from production of seasonal vaccines to pandemic vaccines. Such plans should include the testing of a 'mock-up' pandemic-like vaccines according to established regulatory procedures.

Page 14: 1A pandemic vaccine, also referred to as a 'pandemic-like' vaccine, is a vaccine that anticipates and mimics the characteristics of a pandemic virus and is designed to confer protection against it. The vaccine contains viral antigens to which humans are immunologically naive and which therefore necessarily differ from antigens used in seasonal vaccines. A dossier for this pandemic-like vaccine (including data on antigen content, immunogenicity, safety, and efficacy) is submitted for provisional regulatory approval prior to the start of a pandemic. When a pandemic virus emerges, a variation to the dossier, with technical data specific to the pandemic virus, is then submitted for final marketing authorization.

UR recently completed its tests on healthy adults. It is now seeking adults older than 65 to ensure (ie...to SEE if it will work in the elderly--ST) that it works in the elderly. Other sites will study children's reactions to the vaccine. Dr. Nancy Bennett, Monroe County's deputy health director,
said it's possible that the H5N1 vaccine would eventually be combined with the regular flu shot to make a large segment of the population immune."

COMMENT: This actually means that the virus is very WEAK....It requires a very large amount of the virus to push the body into developing and antibody. The H5N1 virus may not be deadly at all.

September 16, 2005 - Low-dose bird flu vaccine tested on humans - New Scientist -Sanofi Pasteur's trial is testing low doses of killed vaccine virus combined with adjuvant - a chemical that stimulates the immune system. As New Scientist reported at the time, previous experimental work on bird flu suggested that without an adjuvant, these doses of the virus would be unlikely to elicit much of an immune response. That is 12 times as much virus as is needed to make an effective vaccine from an ordinary influenza virus.

March 25, 2005 - US flu vaccine trials may be effort wasted - New Scientist - "The first human trials of a vaccine against H5N1 bird flu are likely to be a waste of time and money. The formulations that the US plans to test are thought likely to be ineffective. But several studies have shown that with people who have not been exposed to before, even doses higher than 15 micrograms have little or no immunising effect."
