March 2007 - Posts

Hey...where is the gamer picture from - the Mozilla edition

Earlier this week, I posted about a little feature that tells you where a persons Gamerpicture is from by looking on Xbox.com I was able to get the developers to sneak it in at the last minute. The problem is when you sneak a feature in at the last minute…sometimes it does not get the proper testing. In this case, the feature did not work like we wanted with Firefox and a few other browsers. Fear not, as the developers jumped back in and made the fix and it’s now live. We also fixed Xbox.com to work better with Opera.

We really don’t mind what browser you use…honest.

Wired Magazine on Blogging

Wired Magazine

When you get your March 2007 copy of Wired Magazine, give the cover story a read. It’s how blogging is changing the face of business. The entire reason why I started this blog (and my blogcasts) almost three years ago was to have a conversation about gaming and Xbox.

What do you think of blogging? What companies do you wish would ‘join the conversation’ ?

Also, check out the separate story (in the same issue) about our friends over Channel 9, (and don’t miss my guest appearance in there as well as the rather dramatic ending.)

Don’t care for the analogue nature that is print? Wired has it all online.

Crackdown Auto Update

Next time your pop your Crackdown disc in (and you are connected to Xbox Live) you’ll get prompted for a title update. According to what I am told, The update ‘addresses several minor technical issues to ensure a smoother online gameplay experience’  and ‘increases the number of ambient gang vehicles that populate Pacific City.’ That last one should held with the ‘Repo Man’ achievement.

There ya have it. What’s up with any DLC? No details yet…but we should have some news soon in it.

GTA IV Trailer (HD)

Just a reminder that Xbox.com will have a never-before-seen HD trailer of ‘Grand Theft Auto IV’ this afternoon. It should appear on this page once the timer reaches zero.

Blog speed (or lack thereof)

As you have may have noticed, the performance of MajorNelson.com over the past couple of days has been less then stellar. So you are asking ‘whats up with that?’ Let me tell you: During the Xbox Live maintenance, clearly you wanted to know what was going on and your coming here to find out. When that happened and we got Digged AND Slashdotted all at the same time it created a little bit (ok, a LOT) of a strain on the MN.com server. Add that to the fact that we were getting slammed with comment spam and you can see we had it more then a little rough. How much traffic did we see? At last count we saw 5.8 million hits in just two days. Either way you look at it, that’s a lot of traffic. Unfortunately, Litheon (the web brains behind the blog) is in Japan on and not available to hop on and take care of business like he usually does. Fortunately for me (and you) Patrick and his crack team from Centracomm (my hosting provider) have jumped in and quickly started working on the server and getting things optimized. (Thanks guys.)  It looks like we’re going to be getting some new hardware soon, and new hardware always makes things better right? Bottom line…thing may be a little bumpy for another day or so with temporary issues here and there as the team works directly on the server to get it back on it’s little computer feet. If things get too sluggish, you can keep in touch with what is going on over at my Twitter site (until we bring that down as well.) Also, I will be leaving comments on for registered users only until we get things back on track.  Thanks for your patience.

Edit: Centracomm add some new hardware to the mix, so you should be seeing blazing speed now. We still have more work do to, but that's a start.

Deepfish

It’s a new browser for your Windows Mobile device, and it’s called Deepfish. Take a look at the video, and grab the free download if this is your thing.

Hey...where is the gamer picture from?

Where is that gamer picture from?Have you ever been asked that question, only to be stumped? With hundreds of gamer pictures on the Xbox Live Marketplace, I was constantly running into this problem when I get messages from the community. Fortunately, I was able to convince the Xbox.com developers to try and help. Now, when you are looking at someone’s gamer pic on Xbox.com (or in the Xbox forums) you can hover your mouse pointer over the picture and find out where it came from. While it won’t tell you exactly which picture pack it is from, it will tell you what title the picture is associated with. So at the very least, it will get you pointed in the right direction. Thanks to the big brains on our wonderful dev team for sneaking this in for me. One more thing: it may not work with every browser, but it should.

I uploaded a screencap to Flickr to show you the alt tag action, or you can just check it on your own gamercard.
