HE never wanted to be in The X Factor and even fled to a beachside cave when it became too much - but this week Altiyan Childs was crowned the talent quest's champion.

He is the first to admit his life has been turned upside down by the show and Confidential was there to record a week in the life of an unlikely reality TV pop star.

He was an emotional and geeky joke in early episodes, before mentor Ronan Keating taught him how to be a serious - but still emotional - contender.

Here's how it happened:

SUNDAY

He's dubbed a poor man's Michael Hutchence - and then performs Don't Change with INXS to mixed reviews. He edges out other finalists Sally Chatfield and Andrew Lawson. Says he's blown away by making it this far.

MONDAY

Grand final. Rehearses, then delivers a solid rendition of U2's Beautiful Day. Lawson is knocked out. Down to Sally and Altiyan, who performs the eventual winner's single Somewhere In The World, to be released the next day.

His eyes fill with tears as he talks to Confidential minutes after being crowned winner.

"I feel reborn and resurrected and loved right now. It's an incredible, special feeling. You are going to see me at my most sincere, passionate and compassionate and I need to show these people exactly why they made the right decision. I believe my music can touch a lot of people and help heal their own pain."

TUESDAY

Non-stop interviews from 6am as the latest talent quest star. Photographic sessions, constant questions and constant answers. Can now leave forklift driving behind as he signs with Sony.

WEDNESDAY

Sleeps until noon. Then to Sony to meet stylists for recording the video of Somewhere In The World.

THURSDAY

Interviews, then off to King St, Newtown, at sunset to film the video. Confidential is given exclusive behind-the-scenes access to the shoot.

FRIDAY

Takes part in more interviews for the new single.

TODAY

Flies to Melbourne, ready to start recording his debut album tomorrow.

"Winning is the easy part," a Sony executive advises.

"It's what you do from now that really counts."
