An invitation to analytical writers

by: StrandedWind

Fri Feb 04, 2011 at 10:19

I just started contributing a bit here six months ago and I've always regretted the build out of Progressive Congress News kept me from going deeper. I see the OpenLeft community much like I see The Oil Drum - a dense, smart source of analysis.

PCN is moving right along, tracking towards a $400,000 grant. Our next task is adding a corp of analytical writers to the mix, and we think we'll be building DailyKos groups for each of the policy areas we track.

If you are a writer of this type and looking for a chance to lead in an area you can find me @NealRauhauser or @SandiBehrns or @caradox and inquire further. If you're not Twitter compliant I am nrauhauser and I use that gmail thing to get my messages.

Hoping to hear from a few of you who are looking for a new adventure ...

Progressive Congress News Status Update

by: StrandedWind

Wed Feb 02, 2011 at 09:12

We rolled out Progressive Congress News the day after the election. I am told our policy oriented news service has almost 700 subscribers to our daily mail blast and that 90% of those are Congressional staffers. Open rates on messages are consistently in the 20% range, which is triple the norm. Breaking news reports have as high as a 75% open rate. That's unheard of in the industry.

We've also just completed our work for the second round of the Knight Foundation's News Challenge and we stand to win up to $400,000 in funding this summer.

Our next phase requires more editors, we will need content contributors, and small cash donations from the community will do much to help us with the big ticket donors we are courting.

Progressive Congress News Special Projects

by: StrandedWind

Tue Nov 16, 2010 at 01:49

We've been slowly rolling out Progressive Congress News over the last month or so. General availability began 11/16/2010 and now we're ready to start talking about some of the other projects we're doing.

The main news feeds are tightly tuned to serve the needs of Congressional staff and our various channels back into the field. The PCN Special Reports are based on Twitter lists and they serve to concentrate different sorts of news.

America's Imperial Implosion

by: StrandedWind

Wed Nov 03, 2010 at 22:17

An Australian friend was wondering what was wrong with us - the virulent hatred aimed at President Obama, the ridiculous lurch to the right that we just experienced. This is all quite puzzling to people who actually have credible news sources. Rather than answering individually via email I'm going to gather my thoughts in a fashion appropriate for someone who doesn't know a lot of our history or internal political divisions.

Legislative Situational Awareness With SharedMinds

I've been sending people to TweetDeck as an advanced client for the adept Twitter user. The methods and layout of @TweetDeck inspire the layout described in Legislative Situational Awareness With Progressive Congress News.

Today I got introduced to a new Twitter console - SharedMinds. It's a better choice for me and I'll describe the particulars below the fold.

Progressive Congress News & You

by: StrandedWind

Fri Oct 29, 2010 at 11:24

Progressive Congress News is a policy oriented system that helps Congressional staff, busy activists, policy wonks, and interested citizens stay informed and work together on legislation.

The system, currently supported by nearly two dozen Progressive twitterati and blogosphere denizens, already has a rich set of features and it's going to expand dramatically in 2011. As this is brand new people are asking "How do I use it?"

Here are some answers to that question ...

Legislative Situational Awareness With PCN

This last year has been full of behind the scenes work on Progressive Congress News. We anticipate a good bit of tuning during the 2010 lame duck session but the service is mature enough that we're going to make it broadly available.

Human Endeavors In Cyberspace

by: StrandedWind

Sun Oct 10, 2010 at 01:58

I recently spoke on the fallacy of the concept of cyberspace. The grasp of time, distance, and causality most humans have simply do not apply to the lower layers of our global data network.

Even so, we're all just a few hundred generations away from hunter/gatherer bands on the savannahs of Africa, and we do what is familiar to us, both at an experiential as well as instinctive level.

The Fallacy of Cyberspace

by: StrandedWind

Sat Oct 09, 2010 at 13:52

We speak readily of cyberspace; a 'place' that sprang into being because cyberpunk author William Gibson had trouble writing dialog involving moving characters. He confessed this in No Map For These Territories, a somewhat rambling 88 minute interview stitched together from clips taken while he was driven in a limousine in a complete circuit of the United States.

This is a convenient metaphor, but the multifaceted reality envisioned by the adept is far different ...
