The 115th Annual Meeting will be held at the historic Camino Real Hotel at 101 South El Paso Street in El Paso, March 3–5, 2011. Coinciding with various centennial commemorations connected to the Mexican Revolution, which began in 2010, the El Paso meeting offers an excellent opportunity to meet near places that will be discussed in many of the sessions.

Accommodations at the special rate of $99 are available by calling (915) 534-3000 or toll-free (800) 769-4300 and asking for the special TSHA Annual Meeting rate. A complimentary shuttle provides transport between the airport and the hotel.

Chaired by Joseph G. Dawson, the Program Committee has constructed an excellent meeting program with sessions on all aspects of Texas history. In addition to the Centennial of the Mexican Revolution, 2011 marks the 175th anniversary of Texas independence, and the sesquicentennial of the beginning of the American Civil War. Heavy interest in sessions dealing with those subjects is expected.

Kent Calder, Sam Moore, Dianne Powell, and Jack Niland straddle the boundary of the U.S. and Mexico at International Boundary Number One in El Paso.

The local Arrangements Committee, chaired by J. Sam Moore Jr., has been planning meeting events with TSHA President Dianne Powell, and with Ellen Temple and Stephanie Cole, co-chairs of the Women in Texas History Luncheon Committee. Events  are teeming with opportunities for special presentations, viewing unique El Paso venues, bidding on auction items, and acquiring new or rare Texas history books.

For the Women in Texas History Luncheon on Thursday, Ellen Temple will begin the program with a history of the Liz Carpenter Award for Research in Texas Women’s History. Michael L. Gillette of Humanities Texas will follow with a special tribute to the late Ms. Carpenter with material from the archives of the LBJ Library and Museum.

Thursday’s Presidential Reception to welcome 2011-2012 President Merline Pitre will be held at the El Paso Museum of History. The History Museum will be showing a major exhibit of original documents and maps from the Archivo General de Indias in Seville entitled Three Centuries of Spanish Presence in the United States of America and will hold over portions of its exhibit The Other Side of the Mexican Revolution--El Paso.

Attendees at the Book Lovers’ and Texana Collectors’ Breakfast on Friday will hear Adair Margo expound on the works of Tom Lea, the noted muralist, illustrator, artist, war correspondent, novelist, and historian who hailed from El Paso. At noon, the Fellows Luncheon and Presentation of Awards will recognize significant contributors to the study of Texas history.

Dianne Garrett Powell, the 2010-2011 President, has a special presentation planned at the El Paso Museum of Art for Friday’s Presidential Banquet as the Association honors her accomplishments. After Saturday’s sessions end at noon, an optional tour of El Paso sites that figured in the Mexican Revolution led by David Romo will conclude the meeting.

Throughout the meeting, additional activities abound. In the famous Dome Bar at the Camino Real Hotel, Lonn Taylor and Light Cummins will serve as auctioneers for the Live Auction on Friday afternoon. The Silent Auction will run March 3 and 4. Recent publications by some of the leading publishers of history and rare books will be for sale in the exhibit area throughout the meeting.

All venues for the Annual Meeting are located within a 5 minute walk from the Camino Real Hotel. Staff will guide attendees to and from each venue along well-lit sidewalks. Both hotels will provide shuttles for those who cannot walk. Details and a map of the Annual Meeting venues are included in the Annual Meeting Program.

In January 2011, the Annual Meeting Program will be mailed to members and posted on the website. For more information, please contact TerriKillen@TSHAonline.org or (940) 369-5200.

Future Annual Meetings are already being planned for Houston in 2012 and Fort Worth in 2013.
