WASHINGTON, Mar 21 -

Today Congressman Mark Schauer (D-MI) issued the following statement after casting his vote in favor of health care reform legislation:

"Despite a massive misinformation campaign paid for by the health insurance industry, the simple fact is that our health care system is broken. Doing nothing would allow the health insurance companies to keep racking up massive profits at the expense of Michigan families, seniors and businesses, and ultimately stifle our economic turnaround.

"That's why I was proud to support this historic legislation, which will cut costs for Michigan families and businesses, close the prescription drug donut hole for seniors, cut the deficit by $1.3 trillion over twenty years, ban health insurance companies from denying coverage for pre-existing conditions or the loss of a job, and allow the American people to sign up for the same kind of quality, affordable, private health care plans that are available to members of Congress.

"For me, this isn't about politics, and it's not about doing what's best for the powerful health insurance companies. It's about doing what's right for the people of Michigan to get our economy back on track."
