Analyst Programmer

Department: IPL Online (Development Team)

Reporting to: Technical Project Manager

1. Role Profile

The overall purpose of the role is to fulfil business requirements for our online solutions delivered via independent.co.uk.

As part of the online development team, the Analyst Programmer is responsible for developing and maintaining code that is delivered through the IPL website (independent.co.uk) and some of our microsites.

The Analyst Programmer also provides support where specific in-depth knowledge of site functionality is required.

The role involves working in conjunction with systems administrators, DBAs, web designers, project managers, and individuals throughout the business to ensure successful delivery of long & short term projects and change requests.

In addition to this, the delivery of technical innovation that exceeds the expectations of internal stakeholders as well as our customers will be a key challenge for the role.

The purpose of the role:

  • Develop and maintain code for independent.co.uk main and micro sites.
  • Translate both business & user requirements into implementable solutions.
  • Build relationships with third-party suppliers out-sourced development teams.

The key result areas:

  • Produce code that meets all functional and non-functional requirements.
  • Deliver to agreed schedules.
  • Ensure code complies fully with our coding standards, and is properly tested and documented.

2. Principal accountabilities/main tasks/responsibilities

a. Develop and maintain solutions following published change request procedures

b. Scoping analysis of larger projects

c. Functional testing

d. Ensure third-party code adheres to IPL standards

e. Provide feedback on tasks progress to project managers and management so that project timescales can be maintained effectively

f. Maintain up-to-date industry awareness on areas of specific responsibility

g. Provide support to the editorial & commercial teams for reported independent.co.uk problems

h. Share knowledge within the Web Development Team

i. Maintain understanding of code & applications

3. Competencies

Business competencies for this role are

a) Pro-active approach to seeking ways to ensure that technology can satisfy the needs of the business.

b) Strong technical analysis and design skills. Thorough understanding of software development tools and methods.

c) A strong belief in the need for technical standards and the ability to ensure tight controls and QA procedures are followed.

4. Role requirements

The role holder will be educated to degree level in a relevant subject and have at least 3 years’ development experience in some or all of the following languages & tools:

a) JAVA/J2EE

b) JAVA/JSP

c) XML, XSL, XSLT

d) PHP, Javascript, HTML, CSS

e) CMS: Escenic, Wordpress

f) Apache Tomcat server

g) SQL, mySQL

h) Attention to code & design detail

5. Desirable skills

a) JQuery

Advertising Account Executive

Reporting to: Group Head

Area: Classified Advertising Department

Main purpose of job: To maximise advertising revenue for an allocated product range from a specified set of clients via the telephone

Duties/Responsibilities:

* 1½ hours of calls per day

* Managing and developing existing client accounts

* Identifying potential growth areas and lead sourcing

* Generating new business

* Using research tools such as NRS and TGI to assist in achieving revenue targets

* Keeping records up to date and accurately using the Adtaker booking system

Training:

* Induction Course - including newspaper history, competitor analysis, glosssary of terms, Adtaker system

* Basic sales skills

* Objection Handling

* Negotiation

* Product training
