Thai women take top spot, Laos double woe

Thailand's Yupa Phokrongploy and partner Kamoltip Kulna recorded two wins on Thursday to help the hosts top the pool

Cha-am, Phetchaburi, Thailand, December 2, 2010 – Hosts Thailand continued their unbeaten run in both the men's and women's events at the AVC Continental Beach Volleyball Cup Southeast Asia Sub-Zonal qualifying round on Thursday in Phetchaburi.

The three-day competition has drawn teams from Vietnam, Laos and hosts Thailand, vying for the top two spots which will secure passage to the zonal tournament.

Asian Beach Games champions Usa Tenpaksee and Jarunee Sannok of Thailand showed no mercy to Phoedany Dovangsavanh and Pany Nanhthavong of Laos in their opening game, beating them in straight sets (21-4, 21-11) in just 24 minutes.

Compatriots Yupa Phokrongploy and Kamoltip Kulna followed suit, outclassing Laos's Chanhaloun Vongsaya and Phimphone Orasa, again in straight sets (21-11, 21-13). Usa and Jarunee, bronze medallists at the recent Asian Games in Guangzhou, then thrashed Chanhaloun and Phimphone 2-0 (21-8, 21-11) in 21 minutes for a perfect sweep in the round-robin tournament.

Yupa and Kamoltip also finished undefeated after breezing past Phonedany and Pany in straight sets (21-9, 21-11). Thailand's two teams have now claimed four straight wins apiece – two each over Vietnam and Laos – and are assured top spot in Pool 1. On Friday, the final day of the tournament, Vietnam and Laos will battle it out for second place.

In the men's event, Thailand, winners over Laos on the first day, enjoyed a rest day on Thursday as Vietnam's two teams proved too strong for Laos, clinching four wins. The Vietnamese pair of Nguyen Trong Quoc and Pham Anh Tuan beat Laos's Sinthanov Phounthongsy and Vilavong Silavanh in straight sets (21-13, 21-10) before then earning another 2-0 victory, this time against Chitsamone Soutthipanya and Thammasinh Phongsavath (21-13, 21-15).

Nguyen Minh Thien and Huynh Quoc Tinh also recorded two wins for Vietnam, defeating Chanhaloun and Phimphone 2-0 (21-12 22-20) before taming Sinthanov and Vilavong in straight sets (21-5, 21-16). Unbeaten Thailand and Vietnam will fight it out on Friday for top spot in Pool 1. However the journey ends for Laos following their losses to both Thailand and Vietnam.
