Next American City hosted a successful conference with “Open Cities: New Media’s Role in Shaping Urban Policy” in Washington, D.C. from Oct. 6-7. This two-day conference convened the top thinkers and practitioners in the unique intersection of urban policy and new media. The conference discussed how the Internet, open data, and software are influencing daily urban life and how new media can further an urban policy agenda. These discussions touched on the dynamic created by a rapidly urbanizing global population that has increased access to information and the potential to be empowered and mobilized by that access. Through panels, presentations, open sessions and keynote speeches, the conference identified ways of improving cities and establish best practices that can serve governments around the world as they form urban policy agendas.
