A tornado has struck the city of Tomar in Central Portugal. Many have been injured in this rare event.
"A surface low approached the area during the later afternoon and brought with it the needed low level shear to interact with the thunderstorms that did develop", TheWeatherSpace.com Meteorologist Kevin Martin said. "These storms fired and started to rotate. Portugal does have tornadoes. An F3 struck Castelo Branco on Nov 6, 1954 and left 5 dead and 220 injured. Another F3 hit Mangualde on Dec 16, 1989".
So while Portugal has seen tornadoes in the past, it is still very uncommon for the area to experience the type of weather event.
