EXCLUSIVE: We've learned that Avatar producers James Cameron and Jon Landau presented 11 principal cast members of the mega-blockbuster film with gifts in the past few days: a blue Toyota Prius for each. But no word on whether any crew were included. A committed environmentalist, Cameron said back in September that Avatar did as well as it did at the box office because of people's longing for a greater connection to nature, and mentioned the Prius: "My optimistic side says that Avatar did as well as it did for that reason, that there's a time for a change, for a recognition that we have to answer for the way that we've been and remember our respect for nature. We have to find a better way than the way we live today. It's not that the movie converted people — it resonated with something that was already there, to find something inside for people and gave people a way to think about this. And if that manifests in people cutting down on their energy usage or recycle or buy a Prius…," he told Time magazine. The challenge for me is to try to help people figure out what to do with that feeling that they're feeling. I do think that part of my job — to show them what to do." Hollywood has a long history of bestowing cars on cast members associated with hit movies. Adam Sandler who was both the producer and star of this year's successful summer comedy Grown-Ups gifted his principal cast members with a new Maserati in the driveway. Chris Rock, David Spade, Rob Schneider, and Kevin James all received the $200K superluxe Italian car which are well-known gas-guzzlers. Of course, Grown-Ups did $271M at the worldwide box office, while Avatar did $2.7 billion at the worldwide box office. But a top-of-the-line gas-saving Prius costs $30K.

Good stuff. The Prius fits in with the theme of “Avatar” and it’s a great gift. Adam Sandler, on the other hand, giving the cast member of Maseratis just seems… indulgent. It would have been even greater news if either Cameron or Sandler gave these gifts to a random selection of cast and crew.
Yeah, then the cast members can dump their toxic Prius batteries at their local dumps when they run out of juice. That really helps the environment, doesn’t it?
Probably not as damaging as the acidic bile flowing in your veins.
I mean, great present. But don’t stupidfy us with ecological causes. If you really would like that, give them used bikes in blue. Com’on, the most energy a car is waisting is when it’s build and shipped.
What a bunch of crap. I’ll believe him when he sells all three of his Malibu houses and downsizes to a simple 1200 square foot condo in North Hollywood. What a tool!
Really. So because Jim Cameron is rich and mega-successful, he’s not allowed to have an opinion on the destruction of the planet?
Just curious. You don’t happen to live in a 1200 square foot condo in North Hollywood, do you?
Typical response. Liberalism is for everybody except the liberal. I’LL enjoy my three mansions and my GIANT carbon footprint. YOU should live in a hovel, read by candlelight, ride a unicycle and take your dumps in an outhouse. Fucking Lear Jet liberals.
Jesus you sound like a lunatic.
A poor generalization. Yes, there are pontificating and hypocritical liberals. But that doesn’t mean we all are. Some of us walk our talk. I’d even guess most of us.
But yes, Cameron is a tool.
Well said, well said..
Nice gesture this holiday season.
Yes Nikki and Nellie, like Jim Cameron is going to buy a bunch of gas guzzling sports cars for his cast.
Cameron himself drives a Prius, I believe.
It would be great to see Jim in a Prius, but … I think he still drives a Humvee (and has a vehicle collection that includes a Humvee Firetruck!).
Yeah, Cameron is so cheap to give away a Prius when he could have given a Maserati…….WTF Deadline, are you idiots today?! Oye.
The obvious comment, one that I’m certain everyone will make, but it needs to be said anyway, is: Why get gifts only for wealthy actors who don’t need it? Why not give the Prius’s to the crew members who collaborated on making the movie? They don’t get large salaries or umpteen years of royalties. They are the working slugs who could really use and appreciate something so generous. Or just donate money to inner city youths.
Yeahhhhh I can imagine the actors would have liked some of the back end rather than the car. For the amount of money Avatar made he could have bought them all solar powered houses and not missed any of that dough.
Kind of a slimy remark there at the end. It’s the thought that counts. Um, if you go to the Prius/Toyota homepage, the new ones start at $22,800, so a top-of-the-line one might be upwards of $30k, so even your research isn’t right.
So do you think Mr Cameron got top-of-the-line ones or the cheaper ones? He obviously got the 30k deluxe package. Shut up fool. Nikki does her research.
yeh you know, because actors don’t get enough free stuff as it is. and they were SOLELY responsible for the success of the film…
did anyone else read that headline wrong? My mind is in the gutter.
Nice. I did not read it wrong the first time, but now I do. Thanks.
Of course the best environmental choice would be to NOT BY A NEW CAR AT ALL.
Use it up.
Wear it out.
Make it work
or do without.
A Prius? Wow, how excitingly 2003 of him! Why doesn’t Cameron take note of what decade it is and get them each a Chevy Volt, Nissan Leaf, or a Tesla or something?
Hope the brake problem is fixed on those Priuses. Otherwise most of crew may end up in cast
Fox is so cheap. Makes sense they would only buy them a Prius.
The movie Avatar didn’t do much for me. I thought it was beautiful to look at and Stephen Lang was the best thing in it, but if I never see it again, I won’t be fussed.
But dammit, I LOVE Avatar because it drives pollution enthusiasts (AKA antienvironmentalists) nuts. Suck it, planet haters. Go fud yourself stupid to a smokestack or whatever it is you do.
No…not really. I’m a global warming agnostic, but that wouldn’t have stopped me from enjoying Avatar, had it been weirder/darker/deeper/more interesting.
And do keep calling people opposed to initiatives like cap & trade, and CARB here in CA, “pollution enthusiasts.” Clearly it’s not because we oppose job destroying over-regulation, the siphoning off of working class/family expendable income via inflated energy costs, or government power grabs. It’s because we’re one-dimensional Captain Planet villains who get massive boners over CO2.
What about the interns? My Hyundai sucks.
he should have gotten them chevy volts!
Yeah, it will help to bring down all the cash that GM owes the taxpayer. Volts are unproven cars. Sorry.
Why is everyone so up in arms that Cameron chose to gift his cast members and not the crew or anyone else? It isn’t a requirement to give a gift. The jealousy and bitterness in the comment section just seems to get more and more rampant. Really??
Putting out a press release saying you gave some rich actors a family car isn’t required either.
I have to agree with pssyeah and Austin Ghoulsbee 100%..this feels like an ‘i’m king of the world’ self-promotion or end of the year tax write-off and if he had to give away cars, should’ve donated to people who need them/can’t afford to BUY their own Prius…
Wonder if they’re all Avatar blue? (Cause that would be really cool.)
Prius + Maserati = Tesla. Come on, Jimmy C. Step it up.
Yes, it is because of the actors that Avatar was so successful. (Eyes rolling) Honestly, this is why these critics are pissing me off about Tron: Legacy. They are lambasting it for the exact same things they chose to ignore when it came to Avatar last year – unoriginal screenplay, wooden acting (if Sam Worthington were any more wooden, he’d be Pinnochio), lack of connection with the characters, etc. I mean, come on, “Unobtainium” ? What?!
And then there is James Cameron the God damn hypocrite. As someone pointed out, the right environmental choice would have been not getting the cars at all! The whole “Priuses are saving the planet” is bull crap. “Well, it saves on consumption of oil and stuff.” Actually, take in account how much oil and carbon emissions are released as a result of producing these vehicles, shipping, etc. it doesn’t make sense.
The Prius is more status symbol than environmentally friendly, and Cameron is a douchebag. First, Toyota gamed the fuel efficiency tests to make it look better than it really was, and its onboard tracking isn’t very accurate either. Second, those batteries–they don’t just disappear in a cloud of fairy dust when they hit end of lifespan. Then there’s Cameron’s flaring egomania, claiming his brain dead movie has helped move environmental awareness (yeah, just like Titanic focused the public on the dangers of hypothermia). And how about making some meaningful effort to advance mass transit and reduce sprawl in a city that is the worst example of needless sprawl?
People see right through these phony gestures and it just raises their contempt for Hollywood and its gluttonous, hedonistic elite.
Assuming that Sam Worthington is one of these “principal cast members” (a relatively safe bet, seeing he is the male lead), then wouldn’t Cameron be irresposible in giving him a Prius? If I remember correctly, I read that Mr. Worthington uses a bicycle to travel. Giving him a Prius as an alternative seems less conducive to the well-being of the environment. But that’s just me.
Cameron knew he was doing the right thing giving the stars the Prius gifts. The crew has to ride the bus. How green of him!
Makes sense for a gulfstream liberal to give a Prius as a gift. As has been well documented, the environmental cost to produce the Prius isn’t even close to the Hummer. The nickel for the Prius battery is mined (which produces acid rain) in Canada and shipped to Europe to be refined. From Europe the refined nickel is shipped to China to create nickel foam. From China the nickel foam is shipped to Japan to make the batteries. From Japan the batteries are shipped to the U.S. to make the Prius. In total it takes 50% more energy to produce a Prius than a Hummer. The environmental damage alone in Canada to mine the nickel should be enough to cause a true environmentalist not buy a Prius. The area around Sudsbury Canada (where the nickel is mined) is so devoid of life, NASA uses it as deadzone to test space rovers.
Thank you for that update, Ford employee.
SO a millionaire gives a bunch of other millionaires a free car.
I’m am sooooo impressed.
How about a donation of 30K in their names to their top charity instead?
Lame.
I think it is his money and he can do whatever he wants with it.
I didn’t go see Avatar because I wanted to get some weird connection to the environment. I went to it it because of the cool 3D visuals.
As for the nonsense of the Prius how much coal is burned to make the electricity to charge up the battery every day. The whole electric car thing is a joke given that disposing of the used battery will probably cause even more damage as it is sent to China and dumped there along with a lot of our electronic waste.
Do they make Prius ships?
I wonder what the carbon footprint of one of Cameron’s ocean expeditions is? If I recall correctly, Cameron is once again renting a Russian research vessel to take him to the Marianas Trench, where he will descend in a submersible to film scenes for Avatar 2.
I’m not sure how many thousands of gallons of diesel this trip will use, but I am pretty sure Cameron will soon deliver another sermon on how we should all live differently.
And he’s absolutely right! I for one am cutting out all my ocean expeditions.
How very thoughtful. I’m sure the crew will be receiving their gifts very soon. What’s that? No gifts for the crew? Well, it seems that the Hollywoodland is still in balance… the cast is lavished with gifts and the crew can barely pay there mortgage. Thanks Jim! Way to keep the status quo.
how about all of us unemployed actors with no representation and who’s unemployment has run out. How about just a warm cup of soup and a loaf of bread with some butter? How much would cost? Seriously. One meal. Is that too much to ask, Jim and Jon? Feeding 90,000 people who really need it would be cheaper than giving 11 Cars to people who don’t. you do the math, boys. And the KARMA…But hey, it’s your dime…merry christmas
Nice comments, guys. Let no good deed go unpunished, right?
Yup. I would venture to guess that most of these comments are from studio plants of 20th Century FOX rivals who are bitter.
Or they’re just insanely jealous of James Cameron, which is most of Hollywood, since he’s 100x smarter, and richer.
The power that propels a Prius is generally generated in dirty coal plants. Moving the generation point upstream from the vehicle itself doesn’t make it “clean.” Half-wit greenies and Hollywood ding-dongs may believe that, but most people understand the Prius is a rolling lie — and that’s before you account for battery manufacture and disposal. If Cameron wanted to buy his cast environmentally helpful cars, he should’ve sprung for a pack of clean-diesel VWs. But they’re not as look-at-me onstentatious, of course.
What about giving these cars to FX guys? Cast didn’t deserve it!
Avatar did well not because of our yearning for a better environment, but because of the curiosity of the 3D, which has already become tiresome after just 12 months (just watch Tron Legacy bomb spectacularly over the next few weeks). Just as Titanic didn’t do well because we were moved by a disaster that claimed over 1000 lives, it did well because teenage girls went to see it seven times. I don’t begrudge Cameron his success, but he constantly talks out of his backside about the importance of his films. Jim, your films are just corny entertainment. Please don’t elevate them because you come across as a complete tool. Which you probably are.
Instead of gifting the wealthy cast of Prius cars why did they not just gift 11 needy college students? Or 11 people that are making a difference in this world and could use the car for their efforts.
Well, that’s great for his optimistic side and everything, but Avatar did well because of 3D dragon-riding air combat, and not because he struck a nerve with nature at the right time. I don’t know a soul who changed anything about their lives after seeing that movie. It was great big movie fun, but that’s all. If he were right, people would be lining the streets and paying 16 bucks a pop to watch that Indian shed a single tear by the side of the highway. But that Indian wasn’t riding a dragon, so I don’t think we’ll see that anytime soon.
Seems like Rupert Murdoch’s capitalism is working by enriching others. From the gas bag douche Jim Cameron to the Toyota salesman, to the car wash that will clean those cars.
You leftists sure need an economic lesson, or are you all going to pay the NON Bush tax rate?
I have no doubt that these cars were gifted to both Sandler and Cameron. Celebrities get free stuff all the time, because it’s cheaper than making commercials.
Did Drudge link to this story, because lookee here, a swarm of idiots have arrived, all spewing venom and citing the same Prius vs. Hummer story (from 2007!) that’s been refuted over and over again in the past three years.
http://www.pacinst.org/topics/integrity_of_science/case_studies/hummer_versus_prius.html
Oh, and even when getting all its electricity from a coal-fired plant, a hybrid vehicle is still cleaner than a conventionally fueled vehicle.
http://arstechnica.com/science/news/2008/04/how-green-are-plug-in-hybrid-vehicles.ars
Finally, the nickel hydride battery in a Prius is a lot less toxic than the lead-acid batteries being carried around in conventional vehicles. The next generation of lithium-ion batteries are even better.
http://www.hybridcars.com/battery-toxicity.html
But don’t let facts get in your way. Keep on hating, haters.
Please remember that Fox Television makes Location Managers use the studios Prius to scout locations. And they are using a lot of the cars. So one could assume Cameron and Landau-didnt pay top dollar invoice from a dealer. They made a nice gift a a good price and got a lot of press-cheaply.
BTD
James Cameron lives in a 9,000 square foot house with a swimming pool in the middle of the desert.
He is a titan who makes the biggest most expensive most bloated projects in what the University of California determined is the single MOST WASTEFUL INDUSTRY in the state (the motion picture industry).
The man may be many things, but he is not an environmentalist.
Very cool of him! But then again, since none of the cast got participation points and had small salaries, and therefore barely made anything while the movie made BILLIONS….it almost doesn’t quite seem like enough….
These are all very good reason as to why never to go see a Cameron movie again or buy anything related to one. Cameron’s just become another rich nutjob that got on the tree hugging bandwagon but hasn’t figured out that most people see through the BS he and his eco-terrorist friends spout. He should have used that money to give all the struggling crew members a bonus and told the rich and for the most part talentless actors to get a real job.
Just more proof that people in Hollywood seem to live in their own little worlds and break the backs of the little guys who make them look good.
He didn’t even pay for them !!!! At least Sandler bought these gifts. Prius is introducing the new color as “AVATAR BLUE” go check it out. So you know he made a deal after lending the name for the color.
