Buffalo Bills Notebook

    • Bills vs. Vikings Preview, Score and More
    • The Bills have been playing much better than their record indicates for the last month and were one dropped touchdown pass away from upsetting the Pittsburgh Steelers last week in overtime for what would have been their third win in a row. They seem to have found their quarterback in Ryan Fitzpatrick, but their defense allowed Pittsburgh's Rashard Mendenhall to run all over the place, and the Vikings have Adrian Peterson. Meanwhile, Minnesota ... More »

Buffalo Bills History

The Bills were a charter member of the American Football League in 1960, becoming one of the dominant teams of the league during the mid-1960s, winning back-to-back titles in 1964 and 1965.

However, the Bills slid to the bottom of the AFL in the late 1960s, but that earned them the right to draft O.J. Simpson with the first selection of the 1969 NFL Draft.

Simpson and the 'Electric Company' powered Buffalo's offense during the early 1970s, as the rusher became the first NFL back to hit 2,000 yards in a single season in 1973. Despite Simpson's prowess, the team qualified for the playoffs only once during the decade, earning a wild-card berth in 1974

The Bills finally earned their first AFC East title in 1980, then returned to the playoffs a year later as a wild-card, earning their first-ever playoff win over the Jets.

The Bills drafted Jim Kelly in the 1983 NFL Draft, and after a stint with the USFL, Kelly, along with Thurman Thomas and Andre Reed, ran one of the most potent offenses in the NFL. Buffalo won its second AFC East title in 1988, and defeated Houston in its first-ever home NFL playoff game. The Bills won the division again in 1989, and the year after that, Buffalo won the first of four straight AFC titles.

The 1990 team was perhaps the finest in team history, going 13-3 and crushing the Raiders for their first AFC title. The Bills lost to the Giants in Super Bowl XXV, falling after Scott Norwood's field-goal attempt went wide in a 20-19 loss.

Buffalo would return to three more Super Bowls, but never came as close to a title as that team, despite having one of the most potent offenses of the era.

The Bills have struggled in recent years, last qualifying for the playoffs after the 1999 season.
