Mountaineers To Champs Sports Bowl

The Most Exciting Weekend Of The Year

Less than ten minutes from kickoff and this crowd is pathetic. It's embarassing. The Mountaineers are on national television and playing for the Big East Championship. It's the last home game for Noel Devine, Jock Sanders, Chris Neild, Scooter Berry, J.T.Thomas, Brandon Hogan, Sindney Glover and others. Just simply terrible. The weather is nice, although a little cold, but not unbearable. Season ticket holders that don't show up today shouldn't be allowed to buy bowl tickets and don't get me started on the students. Absolutely pathetic all the way around.

Representatives from the Orange Bowl and Fiesta Bowl are here. Either WVU, UConn or Pitt will wind up in one of those bowls. There is also a rep here from the Senior Bowl and a scout from the Minnesota Vikings.

A moment of silence was observed in the press box for former WVU SID, basketball scorekeeper and press box steward Al Babcock and Jim Tichenor from the Shinnston News who both died last week.

I heard a great comment before the game by Jeff Jenkins on the Metronews Mountaineer Countdown. He said that there would be seniors introduced today that fans had never heard of before, yet they have been on the team all this time, practicing and helping to make the team better. That's a level of dedication that should be honored and I hope some of them can get into the game today.

Maybe my rant on the fans was a little premature. We are set for kickoff and the lower deck is filling in, however, everything still applies to the students which look like they won't even fill half of their sections.

That touchdown catch by Tavon Austin was his 8th of the season. Most on the team. At the beginning of the season Coach Stewart said he would move Austin to running back next season, but after the emergence of Shawne Alston the coach now says Austin will remain at receiver next year where he wants to play.

Devine looks as healthy as he's been in awhile, it sure would be nice to see him play a full game.

Great second effort by Ryan Clarke to get in the end zone as the coaches give him another chance near the goal line after a fumble on the first drive at the eight.

A big cheer for Owen Schmitt who is on the sideline wearing a "Holy Schmitt" sweatshirt, golden locks flowing from beneath a camoflouge hat. Looking like a true Mountaineer.

Mountaineers dodge a bullet with the replay official overturning the fumble, but what is up with the loose balls? Three different Mountaineers have put it on the turf. Not good.

This Rutgers team is very young, at least on offense. They have three freshman playing important roles in quarterback Chas Dodd, running back Jordan Thomas and receiver/wildcat QB Jeremy Deering. Not to mention sophomores Mohamed Sanu (WR/wildcat QB), Mark Harrison (WR), D.C. Jefferson (TE), Joe Martinek (RB), Devon Watkis (RT) and injured QB Tom Savage.

What looked like a runaway (as long as WVU could hang onto the football) has suddenly became a game with a Rutgers touchdown on a Dodd-Thomas touchdown pass. Mountaineers go into two minute offense to try and regain the two TD lead before the half.

Disappointing end to the first half. WVU had an impressive drive going until Geno Smith was sacked back at the 20 yard line by Antonio Lowery. Tyler Bitancurt's 37 yard attempt was blocked and the Mountaineers left a bunch of points on the field--at least ten. Clarke's fumble at the eight and the blocked FG.

Brandon Hogan out with knee injury. Chris Neild still suffering from hamstring issues.

Sounds like Hogan's knee injury is serious, could miss bowl game which would be the second he's missed in his career. You may remember Hogan missed the Meineke Car Care Bowl two years ago for undisclosed personal reasons. Very disappointing for the senior cornerback.

Official Attendance: 48,386. Ouch. Refer to first post.

Lowest attendance since 2008 game against South Florida.

WVU is on pace to get the most sacks in a game this season. They had eight against Maryland.

I saw Brandon Hogan after the game, I didn't get a chance to talk to him, but he was not on crutches and was walking without a limp, so maybe that knee injury isn't so bad?

Coach Stewart had the Big East Championship t-shirt in the postgame press conference, "Not many people thought that shirt would be handed out today."
