The atoll is essentially oval in outline with a beak-like extension to the east where the reef rim extends across a submarine fault scarp. Tupai has a maximum north to south dimension of 9 km and a maximum width of 6 km across the northern sector (north is to top-left in the above image). The entire atoll has an area in the region of 38 km².
The atoll compises a broad reef rim that nearly completely encloses a shallow, sandy-bottomed, central lagoon. The rim is topped by two major landmasses, one each on the northern and southern sides, and by three smaller islets located upon the atoll's eastern side; they have a combined land area of 11 km².
