The atoll of Orona, located 93 km west from Manra and 250 km east from Nikumaroro consists of a relatively deep (10 m) central lagoon — the second largest in the Rawaki Islands at some 30 km² in area — that is almost completely surrounded by motu. The lagoon has no major passages, but does have numerous spillways and shallow channels allowing exchange between the lagoon and surrounding ocean. The reef islets have a combined land area of 3.9 km², providing habitat for important seabird colonies and turtle nesting sites.
