Eglinton Island

Eglinton Island

Eglinton Island is located in the far western regions of the Canadian Arctic, at the southwestern corner of the Queen Elizabeth Islands group. The island is situated 22 km across the Kellet Strait, from western Melville Island and 23 km across the Crozier Channel from the southeastern coast of Prince Patrick Island. The southern shore of Eglinton Island faces the broad McClure Strait across to Banks Island, some 130 km distant.

Eglinton Island (1,541 km²) is approximately rectangular in shape, tapering to the northeast. Maximum widths in the southwest and northeast are 27 km and 9 km, respectively; maximum length is 73 km. From the low-lying coastal zones the interior of the island rises gradually to low hills of up to 200 m in height. The northern sector of the island is the lowest, where elevations average 10-20 m above sea level.
