Cornwall Island

Cornwall Island

Situated near the centre of the Queen Elizabeth group of islands, Cornwall Island lies 13 km south, across the Hendriksen Strait, from Amund Ringnes Island (on the left side in the above image) and 45 km north, across the Belcher Channel from the Grinnell Peninsula of northwestern Devon Island. The landmass partially visible at the bottom edge of the image is the small Table Island, located midway across the Belcher Channel. To the east lie Graham Island and Norwegian Bay, with Ellesmere Island on the northeast.

Rectangular in shape, Cornwall Island has a maximum east to west extent of 78 km and a maximum north to south width of 37 km; total land area of the island amounts to 2,358 km². Terrain on the island is low and comprises three distinct bands that run across the island from north to south. Of these, the western third of the island is low and flat with average elevations of 10-50 m above sea level. From the west the landscape slopes gradually upwards to the central regions of the island (darker-coloured in the above image) where elevations average 75-200 m, before grading gently once again to the east coast. The highest point on Cornwall Island is reached at Mount Nicolay (350 m) on the north coast (visible in the above image as a light-coloured patch located immediately west from Lake Nicolay (midway along the northern coast).
